Irony or maybe cynicism.

Its official, summer is over. According to the Met Office what we have just experienced is a summer that has been warmer than normal.

This week also sees the demise of the 100watt incandescent bulb. However, the bit they don’t tell you is that, with every light fitting replaced with an ‘energy saving’ bulb, it causes you an increase in your central heating bill. (Of course the spin is different, and works on the principle that most of the population can’t get their head around the reality). What is also hidden is the cost of how to dispose of the highly dangerous and polluting heavy metals that are used in these products. Here the danger is very real and should not be underestimated. The majority of the long term health issues arising within the New York emergency services following the 911 terrorist action, were as a result of the damage done to these courageous individuals from broken energy saving bulbs in the towers.

The Health and Safety recommendation is that should a bulb or tube get broken, the building is evacuated, ventilated and the debris is only cleared by someone suitably trained and protected. As we know every employer has a duty of care to their employees.

We were trumped this week by the main stream media picking up an example of the Glass & Glazing industry at its best.> ….[ more ]

For years the major glass producers have exploited their dominance and power in the market, to force through unsustainable and unjustified glass price increases. Price increases that have a damaging effect on us all!

In the last few months alone prices have gone through the roof, with an increase in both June and September from some of the major players.

As manufacturers, GAP together with sister company Rockdoor, produce thousands of sealed units for our panel and composite doors each and every month to customers across the UK and Ireland....[ more ]
