Taxing times ahead.

It is anticipated that the 15% VAT rate will end on the 31st December 2009. To compliment this the GGF is giving the appearance of wanting to add a levy (tax) of their own. What it does say, is that those involved in marketing of products need to up their game before 2010 arrives. I would guess, as last time, for an installation to be exempt payment has to be made in full before the deadline.

GGF is looking to charge 3 times for the one service.

The Glass & Glazing Federation and its subdivisions have laid the seeds for it to be able to charge the Window Industry Consumer, not once, or even twice, but three times for the privilege of allowing them to act in an environmentally responsible and sensible way.

Using GGF’s own various figures, it would appear they are potentially looking to receive from the Consumer an additional £3.4 million of clear net profit per annum, for something they (the Consumer) would have already been charged for.

This comes about from the introduction of WER’s (Window Energy Ratings) via the BFRC and the rather confusing way it is administered. To be clear from the outset we have no criticism with the aims of WER’s, but rather its implementation, its meaning and its value to the Consumer. At its inception the objectives of the BFRC have been hampered by political and commercial consideration needed to bring the different supply chain factions on board. This of course has meant from the outset it was going to be a compromise. Then again the feeling was, anything is better than nothing - no disagreement there. All that James Litchfield is saying is true, builders from the past century would have used PVCu, however I met with English Heritage recently and it’s abundantly apparent, their ONLY brief is to maintain the fabric of the building, keep it looking identical and maintain it with identical materials.

Whilst I have much sympathy for their position as it pertains to Grade I/II listed buildings, this premise also extends to conservation areas. Thankfully many in those areas do see the benefits of energy rated PVC windows, providing they are sympathetic to their surroundings …[ more ]
