The debate on the use of PVC window framing in conservation areas goes on. Without knowing more than what is said in the media ourselves, it seems clear that a lot of the ‘anti’ protagonists have their own agendas of self promotion, more than any real concerns for the subject in mind. (They seek to denounce a material, when in reality the complaint is about aesthetics, and that can apply to any material.) Then again the subject is how PVC is used in ‘Conservation Areas’, and on that basis can anyone in the industry, hand on heart, say that ALL installations in these locations are sympathetic to their surroundings? The point of course is that the installations that are done correctly blend in so well that they go un-noticed. We have a subject here where everyone with a view is both right and wrong in equal measure. …[ more ]

It’s time for the pompous, elitist, self-appointed gurus of style to stop looking down from their ivory towers and to see the real world as others see it. The Daily Telegraph may be a conservative (with a small “c”) barometer of public taste. But it is interesting to read the on-line responses to their recent article by Christopher Howse, prompted by English Heritage’s outrageous, ill-informed and cheap-shot attack on the pvc window. The 50 or so bloggers were split roughly equally in their view – and the pro-pvc bloggers had by far the stronger case. They argue that pvc is often cheaper than its comparable timber counterparts; it is sustainable in terms of its longevity and, even at the end of its life, 100% recyclable. Well made PVC windows are remarkably thermally efficient, even though the architectural snobs may not like it (one enlightened 70 year old blogger makes the point that they probably don’t like microwave ovens or sat-navs either). …[ more ]

Could I ask you to draw your readers attention to the petition that has been launched on the Downing Street Petition web site to draw attention to the dramatic increase in glass prices (up to 50%), announced, by the dominant Glass Manufacturers at the end of May, with full implementation planned by the end of June at the latest.
