REHAU has long supported the BFRC window energy rating (WER) scheme as a marketing tool for installers, and I genuinely think it is a nice idea for end users in helping them to visualise the relative differences in window thermal performance.

However, what is not a good idea in my opinion is using the scheme to make a technically sound assessment for the overall energy performance of a building. Yet, this is exactly what is being proposed in the new Building Regulations which would see WER ratings as the only criteria for demonstrating Part L compliance in replacement windows.

Apart from the question of whether it is advisable to effectively give the BFRC monopoly status in certifying windows to the Building Regs, the WER scheme is simply not the most appropriate tool for architects, house builders or any professional specifiers. ...[ more ]

Consumers were disgruntled to say the least last winter when their fuel bills rose to unmanageable levels. Gas customers were faced with a 35% increase on their annual energy bills and electricity customers a 9% increase. The bad news is recent news reports suggest we might be facing further increases this winter.

According to Greenpeace, which has seen a draft of the Government's plans which are about to be set out in detail, the estimated cost of meeting the renewable energy target will be £100bn. This is the amount of funding needed for a new energy infrastructure, including 7,000 more wind turbines. This translates to an additional cost to the consumer of 25 per cent on gas bills and 17 per cent on electricity bills. ...[ more ]
