The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000  organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across.

In the News

Moving forward sees the industry provide a U-value of 0.6 W/m²K for IGU’s from " " and Whole window U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K from Pultec.

Getting energy from your windows, CAB reminds us that there is more than one ‘A’ in town, 2 from the independent BRE (Building Research Establishment) and 1 from the Glass Industries GGF.

They have a case, a case for selling says Listers. Wicona lets go a tornado in Doha. Pilkington reaches new heights to clean up in Wales.

Darling - Get Britain Building rues missed opportunity on VAT

Kevin Ahern wonders if your salesmen could cause your company to be sued for quoting what it says on the energy saving label.

This reminds us that with the chill in the air outside, the consumer appears to be let down by the hype and contradictions of WER’s. At this time of the year, the time of the year that warmth, its cost and saving the planet most concerns the paying customer, we feed them WER performance figures that seemingly set out to mislead, and as a result this will inevitably lead to disappointment. In our litigious society is it a risk worth pursuing?

Market growth – registration of window installations were up in November when compared to the same period last year.

For those owners of the larger premises that really want to do something positive on the energy front, save money, drastically reduce their CO2 output and avoid the potentially hazardous problems associated with the not so energy efficient fluorescents the answer is here ...[ more ] . It works; it really works and does exactly what it says on the label.

Are you heading for a break?

Some will be thinking, that’s it folks, I’m off, I need a break – thank goodness it’s Christmas.

We have moved into a virtual silly season, the high streets are packed with people trying to buy things that will make others happy. Supermarkets have every item flying off the shelves as people stock up, and as the 25th approaches they will be buying more food than it is possible to consume on 1 day, or even 2 days or even the extended weekend in front of them.

What is amusing is how habits of our parents are passed down through the generations. We stock up because traditionally the shops will be shut, people stop working, and people have a break. In our modern age not everything is as it was – come the 26th all the shops will be open again. Those with goods and produce will be open and trading as if the 25th never happened.

The Bank of England has deduced that almost half the mortgage payers in the country are better off to the tune of £130 per month. ...[ more ] .

From here at the Fenestration News we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year – may the wind always be at your back ….

Holiday, what holiday, the Fenestration News is a 24/7/365 operation. While some might have their feet up, the news will still be updated as it comes in. It is worth recognising that what for some is a holiday, for others that live and breathe their work, this is catch up time. Catch up time on all those things that could improve their business.

A lost window of opportunity

Dear Ian

A lost window of opportunity

A scrappage scheme for domestic central heating boilers?

So, HMG is funding homeowners to produce more efficient heat only to watch it all leak out of their old, draughty windows.

Network VEKA, as an organisation and via many of our member companies, supported the Glass and Glazing Federation’s petition backing a scrappage scheme for energy-efficient replacement windows. ...[ more ]

Dear Ian

Smoke and mirrors

In my recent quest to understand the BFRC rating scheme, I seem to have mis-understood a lot of what the scheme is all about so I thought I would try to simplify my current thoughts in the topic .

The BFRC claim that A rated windows are net heat providers of your home . ref . Giles Willson (at Glassex) , Maurice Levitt ( consultant and physicist) various correspondence , Graham Hinett (Fensa Times Dec 09) Et al, and I am sure, many others, on numerous occasions, yet the BFRC guidance notes explain that the scheme is purely a comparison for windows and NOT an absolute performance measurement , you see my confusion?

The document that explains the calculation of the formula (that has been peer, industry and academia reviewed) suggests that the sun provides more power in Aberdeen that it does in Plymouth, you see my confusion?

The same document goes into great detail about a Dutch reference house and quotes a number of British and European standards ( and uses them negligibly ) but does not state the reference source of the solar data that it uses. ...[ more ]

You see my confusion?

Lost opportunity?

In our inbox John Ogilvie, MD of Network VEKA, laments the lost opportunity in the Chancellor’s pre-budget statement to fully embrace what can be done to highlight the government’s true intensions when it comes to CO2 emissions. All that Alistair Darling managed was the headline grabbing boiler scappage scheme, and in the detail indicated the aim was to replace about 120,000 old ‘G’ rated boilers.

In real terms these schemes don’t usually cost the government (the tax-payer) – although as yet the actual financing terms on the boiler scheme have yet to be announced. We know with the car scrappage scheme the manufacturers had to pay half of the discount and they covered this by raising prices. The tax-payer was covered by the increases in sales causing more tax to be collected. More sales, more profit, win, win.

What really happens when the government puts its weight behind this sort of initiative is to lend it credibility and lift a market. To our older readers this is what we used to call marketing – creating a reason to buy. This is where we have to applaud Anglian, not a company known for its marketing tradition, they obviously realised that building a story around the discounts that were already being given would create interest – they called it the window scappage scheme. It is just a surprise no one else seems to have cottoned on and copied it. ...[ more ]
