The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. This week on the main Fenestration News web site we have 62 new industry stories and 9 new vacancies, some of which are below. In The News It is interesting how one language can be made to fit the parameters of the reader no matter how seemingly clear the definitions are. We have all seen it recently in the discussion on MP’s expenses; those that are paying for the life-style have a different interpretation to those that are taking the money. From that comes the phrase ‘they just don’t get it’ Within the Fenestration Industry it is the same, we have a set of performance definitions laid out for us under the Building Regulations defined as ‘Doc L’. Then further along in the same Building Regulations we have the need for ‘trickle vents’ defined. From that there should be no surprise when you get a wry smile and a little irony when the phrase ‘Oh yes……’ is uttered. Some people understand it and others ‘just don’t get it’ This week we are reminded of the consequences of the serial ‘phoenixers’, some believe if they don’t supply them someone else will. Which of course may be true, but it does mean that the greater majority of well structured, well managed companies are forced by their suppliers to pay for the failure of others, and still people ‘just don’t get it’ continued below........... In the same vein we have heard the reason that companies are going under is something called the ‘credit crunch’ whatever that means. What is apparent though is phoenixing when a market is running well, and then the same party doing it again when things get tight is not a fault of market. The greater majority understand that and some ‘just don’t get it’ There should be more on phoenixing but the credit has to go to Ian Longbottom of Sliders and Matthew Glover on his blog ( Here ) for opening up the subject, as they certainly ‘do get it’ At this time of the year we are reminded of the performance advantages of Solar Gain and in the next few days we will see it hit its peak. Enjoy it now, because in 6 months time the gain will only be half as effective, then again for windows on a north elevation it has no meaning at all. Who gets that? Remember to update your links to the main Fenestration News website www.fenestrationNews.com This is important if you consume the RSS feeds At the Fenestration News we usually go along with the idea that other people’s views should be aired without comment by us, but… Edgetech and the ‘dust mite’ Following our recent item that questioned how the industry presents its self to the consumer, we have had a response from Andy Jones of Edgetech. Andy Jones, quite reasonably, wanted to make his point in defence of what he saw as us having a go at his company and his segment of the Window Industry supply chain. A lot of us, even those that do not know him directly, are more than aware of the contribution Andy and Edgetech have made to move the agenda forward in waking the Fenestration Industry up to the added value benefits of selling energy-efficiency. It could even be said that without Andy’s enthusiasm and passion for the project, the industry wouldn’t be where it is today. The problem is it seems that enthusiasm and passion can get at cross purposes with reality. …[ more ] In Box The collapse of the company had its roots in the credit crunch ? Sir, I must write in response to the comments made by “The Glazine” dated 16th June, regarding the demise of Advantage Trade Supplies Limited”. You reported that ‘the collapse of the company had its roots in the credit crunch’. Sir, if the roots of Advantage’s demise were in the credit crunch it must have started far earlier that most of us can remember! …[ more ] Yours faithfully,
Ian Longbottom In Box Letter to the Editor Dear Ian There is a common misconception that most people trade quality for reduced price in a recession. Some do, but generally that isn’t our experience. In a recession most homeowners become tuned in to quality and better value for money. Quality is hard to pin down. Some see quality hardware as looking good for longer. Others see quality as products which are trouble free. However you define it, quality starts to make its presence felt when you pick up a handle. More than likely it feels solid and long lasting. If it also looks good …[ more ] Yours sincerely
