The majority of window companies ignore new business

One of the interesting topics from the ‘around the table’ network sessions at the recent ‘glasstalk’ get-together, was the contradictions in how the industry communicates with potential customers.

The contradictions start with the anticipation that the prospective customer will always do something that we ourselves would never consider doing. Frontline companies historically have always maintained a high level appearance in listing directories such as the Yellow Pages. The free entry is never enough, it has to be boosted with a more visible and costly entry. When you then ask those that placed these advertisements how they themselves find a product or a service, the answer is always the same – the internet.

Then go on to ask these same people about their own company’s web presence and you will find that the majority in the industry do not have a website. That is - the majority of the active companies in the Fenestration Industry do not have their own website. It would appear that while they use the internet in their own business and daily life they have yet to tap into its potential for growing their business.

The point here is that if people look at how they themselves act, there is a reasonable presumption that their customers are the same ...[ more ] .

Figures Activity and Phrases

Over the years we have always taken an interest in how our readers use our site. The danger here of course is reading too much into any particular trend and then steering ourselves in the wrong direction.

This information obviously comes from our web stats and the page count. What is clear is that, as with the web as a whole, no one specific should be focused on, rather, we take all the information in the round to make an assessment of trends to improve performance.

Here are some useless facts and figures relating to visitors to the Fenestration News web site that some may find interesting (everything given below relates to the period 01/11/09 – 18/11/09).

On Computer operating systems, 95.2% of all visitors are using Microsoft Windows, of that 67.2% are using Windows XP. Then we have 3,851(3.2%) using the Mac OS X. Then down at the far end there is the 695 of the enlightened from the Linux community.

With Web Browsers, unsurprisingly 81% are using Internet Explorer with 37.8% on version 8. Firefox accounts for 11.1%, Safari came in at 6,744 hits with the others taking up the rest. We also have 26 browsing via mobile phone.

2,512 of our returning visitors in this period have us booked-marked.
