The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. News - extra The industries good and great meet up next week to talk glass, probably your last chance to get on board Pilkington provide online tools to aid reductions in noise. Framexpress heads for a secure future with a BS and aligning with the police. Rockdoor head to the beach. Swisspacer are reporting year to date sales of nearly 600% up on the same period last year. Windowbase predicts direct marketers will turn to the email & fax to combat the postal dispute, while also rescuing Focal Research customers. " " uses fundraising to make a difference. Business Micros shows figures on the up. John Ogilvie, of Network Veka, has a CIS moment and asks the question on everyone’s lips – Who are you! Musings Is it perverted or just simply mad that someone believes you can ‘relax’ being perched on a glass floor hovering over a crack in the earth big enough to swallow the Lake District, peaks and all, a few times over? For those of a nervous disposition they can be assured stiletto heels and nail punches are banned. … more here Heywood Williams, one of those companies that has its place in the history of the fenestration industry, has seemingly succumbed and opted for a ‘pre-pack’ arrangement. The ‘pre-pack’ could be said to be the industry’s equivalent of an ASBO, the danger is that those with this award will see it as the local hooligan does - a badge of honour. As we have said before, while this arrangement appears to save jobs in the short term, it kills off the evolution and renewal in industry. Without endless challenges from new upstarts an industry declines and the jobs actually disappear. Interbuild, or Glassex@Interbuild has come and gone. What is clear this time is that exhibitors were moved from a networking event into the realms of actually being exposed to prospective customers – from that point of view it was a success. This exhibition now joins the many others that have the same focus and aims. In the coming years it is going to be interesting to see which one can take the high ground. Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com In Box Letter to the Editor Dear Ian, Dear Ian, May we offer a cautious welcome to the emergence of the new Fabricators’ Alliance. As I have often said, anything that helps to bring structure to this industry is always to be encouraged. What concerns us however is the group’s apparent shyness about its own infrastructure. Unless they all met by chance like ‘Strangers on a Train,’ can we assume they are bonded by some common factor and, if so, do they have some reason not to share this with us? ...[ more ] John Ogilvie Managing Director, Network VEKA
Glasstalk programme announced: key ‘taboo’ issues to be addressed with on the couch sessions The programme has been announced for the next GlassTalk (November 3rd, Daresbury Park Hotel, Cheshire) and guests can expect some fireworks when the event’s ‘On the Couch’ sessions address a number of key issues that have proved controversial this year. Of these perhaps the most emotive will be that of glass prices and Steve Sutherland of Dortech, who placed the petition on the 10 Downing Street website which called for ‘Lord Mandleson to investigate glass pricing activities currently being taken by the dominant glass suppliers to the UK’, will be On the Couch together with key industry representatives, to thrash out the biggest issue to affect the industry this year. Dave Ruzicka, joint managing director of super-fabricator Sash UK will also be joining GlassTalk On the Couch. Dave has a strong view about everything but some of his more outspoken comments will appeal to anyone that has a problem with ‘Phoenix’ operators, ‘dominant’ systems suppliers, cut-throat, cut-price fabricators – and a whole lot more. Another confirmed guest is Chris Ball of MBA Associates, who has much to say about why companies fail – and how to prevent it; some rather ‘off the wall’ thoughts on recruitment and ‘human resources’; and a great deal else. Interestingly, Chris’s opinions are honed through relationships with the industry’s biggest operators in all sectors – is there anyone that he hasn’t worked for? The organisers say they will do their best to prise some secrets from him. ...[ more ]
