The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. From the News Runnymede 19th June 2010, another gathering of the good and the great, and another great Charter voted through. Yes those fun guys at Network Veka have been at it again. Network Veka has turned into one of those entities that just get it. Some of them may not know the name of the trickle of water running through it, but they do know the value of the network of like minded people they are associated with. The day was carried off well by a great on topic MC, and an equally in the mood Steve Davis. Another Network Veka step change, which is set to strengthen, is its ability to generate leads pro-actively – the Network is ensuring its members have someone new to talk too. The Patsy Gallant song, from New York to LA, doesn’t quite work when the words are changed to from Rochdale to LA, but I am sure Gary Dean’s move to C.R. Laurence located in LA will still make him a star. The possibility of always achieving growth. The emergency budget has been and gone, and life goes on. All there is to show so far is a little tinkering here and there, and the hope that maybe perhaps these changes can reduce the long term debt that weighs heavily on all of us. What shouldn’t be lost is that governments do not at any time have money; however, they have at all times the right to dip into your pockets and take out what they need for their next project. What governments do and say when it comes to indicating their demand on our money does of course affect our quality of life, and our ability to develop it further. Just as these demands affect us as individuals, they also create challenges for the companies we work for. The most notable measure in the budget to affect us all is the rise in VAT. Some will think it is only 2.5%, others will know it as a tax increasing by more than 14%. Some will try to absorb it; the supply chain will just see it as a tax to pass on to their customers. What it is clearly is a cost and a cost that is not necessarily going to help the margins. Ignoring it is not an option. On top of this The Office of Budget Responsibility announced yesterday that it expects 500,000 public sector workers will lose their jobs and that the Treasury is anticipating an additional rise in unemployment of some 1.3 million. Is it price increases or the fear of unemployment that puts people off buying? Either way there is hesitation, a self feeding hesitation that just holds back the market. For an industry the real damage is in not realising the effect this could have, and in not having a strategy in place to overcome it. There are many ways to ensure that the situation should not affect any plans for business growth...[ more ]. Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com In Box Which? magazine published Double Trouble Dear Ian Today, in its July edition, Which? magazine published Double Trouble, an investigation into double glazing. It is trouble for the nationals, and trouble for the industry. The report “shamed the biggest names in double glazing” but unfortunately its narrow focus on the national direct sell companies meant that Which? has inadvertently reinforced the public’s perception of double glazing as an industry of rogues and cowboys. Had they included local double glazing firms in their investigation the picture would have been different. It’s a shame, because the industry is a lot more than the nationals. Although individually they are very large, the big four’s share has fallen. The bulk of the market is supplied by local firms, who mostly give an excellent and honest service. Predictably Which? found, as in previous investigations, that the national direct sell companies continue to use hard sell tactics and misleading claims to sway potential customers. In one case Which? found the ‘original’ price was dropped by almost £17,000. ...[ more ] Yours sincerely
Tony Pickup In Box Door-Stop response - door panel maker is halving its guarantee? Dear Ian Is the recent announcement that one leading door panel maker is halving its guarantee to just 5 years (while planning to call it a day before its guarantee runs out) the beginning of the end for door panels? Door panels have been bedevilled by problems over decades, and installers have had to carry the can with customer dissatisfaction, and costly call outs and replacements. Now it’s been claimed that a new generation of door panels has arrived. But in 2010 isn’t that like trying to sell a Mark 4 Cortina on its merits over the Mark 3? A second generation door panel is still a panel in a beaded subframe in a frame. Everyone remembers seeing massed ranks of ugly front doors disfigured by door panels in multi-coloured variants. Who will be left holding the baby when more door panel makers start slashing their guarantees...[ more ].
