The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. From the News News shorts: - Recent surveys and reports show that the British economy is ahead of expectations, and from the news releases we have in the Fenestration News the industry is keeping with this trend. In common with others in the Home Improvement Industry, Everest has started to position itself to capitalise on the Coalition Government’s impending ‘Green Deal’, in expanding its solar panel and insulation business, by adding heating boilers to its range. What will surprise a lot of people is, not only is a modern boiler more efficient, running one can also provide electricity for the home, meaning they can also qualify for the ‘feed-in’ tariff. The ‘Green Deal’ is expected to cause a rapid expansion of growth for energy related industry, but as they say elsewhere ‘you’ve got to be in it to win it’ There are good reasons to stay specialised and in a niche corner of the market place. However, the crossover of systems, structures and trades throughout the Home Improvement range of products does mean those that encompass all its facets will ultimately be more effective. Jobs, jobs and even more jobs this week Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com Knocking others, knocking the industry In conversation with various industry players of late some unusual thinking has been thrown up. Some of the periphery and those within the supply chain organisations are talking in terms of tough times, as are just a handful of front end companies. However, it is reasonable to suspect they could be just testing out their thoughts, as most of what is being said is anecdotal rather than fact. What is clear is the main players are just streaking ahead of even their own predictions and only see further gains on the horizon. This reality begs the question what is the difference between the 2 trains of thought. The companies that are not at the moment finding it so straightforward were not finding it easy in the boom times (whatever they are) either, they were just being dragged along and picking up the crumbs of others. There is some commonality in those that are not reaching their potential; they all seem to see the world from a mutual perspective, a collective, a club, a competition free zone. They seem to be suggesting together they can be better, the only reasoning being that if you are not part our club you must be rotters. If we all belong to FENSA we must be good, if we all have WER’s we must be great, if we all have IBG’s (Insurance Backed Guarantees) we are offering the consumer protection for when we as business managers screw up. The list goes on and on. The real commonality within this club is they do not highlight what is good, different and special about their own product or company. Instead they stick to knocking others, knocking the industry and believing that if you create fear you create sales....[ more ] In Box Letter to the Editor - Aidan Harte, Freefoam Plastics Dear Ian I applaud Swish Building Plastics in extending its guarantee on white profile to 25 years. It was seen as a big day for roofline and rainwater when Freefoam launched its extended 20 year transferable guarantee five years ago. Some kept to a more limited 10 year guarantee on white profile, while Swish raised its guarantee to 15 years. Freefoam is still alone in giving a 10 year guarantee on coloured profile. But domestic and commercial property owners voted with their wallets and our installers found the 20 year guarantee helped them win more orders than their competitors who offered more grudging guarantees....[ more ]

Aidan Harte In Box Letter to the Editor - Reply To Fenestration News Leader- From Tony Pickup Dear Ian, At the end of the DGCOS conference Nick Ross stated emphatically that double-glazing is a GREAT industry, but one where the excesses of the few can make it harder for the many to sell. There may have been some who misunderstood what he was saying but that wasn’t obvious from the long queue of enthusiastic installers who queued to speak to him and have their photograph taken with him. There was no sign of any of the audience having been insulted or unhappy with what he said. On the contrary, the feedback we received after the conference and since from members, sponsors, new sponsors and potential members has been overwhelmingly positive. Nick (speaking personally and not on behalf of DGCOS, as he made clear) put some of the blame on commission only selling, citing the Which? report’s review of bad sales practices among the big four national home improvement companies....[ more ]

Tony Pickup In Box Letter to the Editor – Tim Halls, Sika Roof Assured Dear Ian As we recover from the gales that have battered the UK and we look ahead from autumn to winter, homes are increasingly exposed to the elements and if water can get into our homes it clearly will! While many installation companies have focused on the obvious sales openings in windows and doors, some are missing out on the considerable opportunities in flat roofing, particularly at this time of year. Traditional felt based flat roofs often fail to perform when the weather gets nasty so it’s the perfect opportunity to target customers with a long lasting, low maintenance flat roofing system that’s easy to install too....[ more ]
