A recent news release at the Fenestration News caught our attention, visually at least it implies Nick Dutton at Door Stop wants to give you £10.00. That in itself fulfils a good part of the marketing brief – grab attention.

The challenge of marketing. Is it to raise the awareness of a company, its products, is it to remind customers you are still in business or is to find those more elusive new customers?

The reality is that it is all of the above; the contradiction is, in having a single catch-all approach it rarely works. While the activities required for each of the aims may partially overlap, they do need different approaches. Raising a company’s profile is not necessarily the same as selling more products, it may help when a Salesman cold-calls in that a prospect can relate to the Company name. However, that on its own will not guarantee the opportunity to present a proposition to a new contact.

In simple terms the challenge is to have a product or a twist on an existing product, that with it the prospect can gain a benefit or an advantage, giving them the reason to want to talk to your company. Without it why should they waste theirs and your time?

Going back to the Door Stop press release, it fulfils the brief, it even goes on to define that this money is not a simple headline grabbing give-away, but an accrued benefit from the use of effective practises. The press release shows the Customer a benefit, along with raising the awareness of the company name and logo – one item working in harmony on all levels. However, if this offer from Door Stop does not produce new customers, all it would have done is given money to existing customers that would have ordered at the original price. Within the same context, and what shouldn’t be lost, this was a press release (it is news today and will be replaced tomorrow). Without some form of ongoing advertising, the press release will be for naught.
