Industry up and down

The talk this week is of ecobuild. The organisers are hoping that by the end of the show some 50,000 visitors would have crossed the threshold, and judging by the activity in the halls, they could be on track to close in on this target. What is there to see, yes there are the usual hanger-on’s that we can expect at all trade shows, but over the years most of us already have our filter mode for these set to ‘auto’ and just don’t notice them. The rest of the show is about putting those that have products ahead of the curve together with like minded potential buyers – the operative here is suppliers meeting consumers. Or you could say it is a show that is shaping the market place.

As an exhibition ecobuild illustrates why the attendance has fallen for the old timers, one sector is in tune with the future, the other the past.

FTSE 100 companies are suggesting that the tax burden is threatening UK jobs. The government tax take from these companies now stands at 56.6pc of gross, that’s an increase of 16pc over the previous year. The pound has also come under pressure through what is seen as a lack confidence in the UK’s direction; this in turn is fuelling increases in material and fuel costs. These influences, when added together, are set to make moving forward for industry tougher. There are calls from the business community for whoever is in charge to ‘get-a-grip’.

John Ogilvie, Managing Director of Network VEKA has written a letter to press to correct the Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme’s earlier release which states that, “until now the consumer has had no adequate protection from bad practice and bad installers.”

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Mr Ogilvie and Network Veka for producing, what I think, is the best independent installer scheme operating in the double glazing installation sector. I am also happy to acknowledge that his network pioneered much good practice and continues to set high standards. However his network is a relatively small exclusive club. ...[ more ]
