The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. From the News Making something cheaper - doesn’t always mean the use of poorer quality materials Last time around, we lead off with a couple of John Ruskin quotes, effectively highlighting what is meant by price as opposed to cost to the consumer. Having since read a ‘twitter posting’ from the guys at Roseville I am reminded that in some ways, but not many, we now live in a different world. In the game that is business, the object is to be the best in every quarter, the reality behind this means making more profit than your competitors for the same delivery price. This was also the point behind the excellent article we published from Chris Ball of MBA Associates entitled ‘The Race – How to Avoid Getting Eaten’ Where things differ nowadays is when it is said “make something cheaper” it doesn’t always mean the use of poorer quality materials. What it can mean is being cleverer at getting the product to market. In Industry the term ‘lean manufacturing’ or just ‘lean’ is bandied around to attempt to explain the process. It obviously isn’t a subject that can be properly covered in a few sentences in the Fenestration News; all we can do is spark ideas. Why should we bother? Quite simply, the continued growth of the industry is important to all of us, come January 2011 the industry is being hit again with statuary rises in cost for no perceived benefit. Just on VAT it means 20% of all our efforts will go to paying this one tax. For the supply chain there is the perceived luxury of the net price with VAT just being passed around, yet they have their part to play or lose custom, at the retail end this is a real hit, the consumer has to pay it in full. I would guess Government is continuing its trend of assuming that every rise in tax will be met with equal efforts from industry to become more effective and neutralise the increases. If this tax is passed on it stands to defeat Government aims, as it will increase inflation. In essence being ‘lean’ is about being more ‘efficient’ and ‘effective’, quite a glib statement as isn’t that what we all do each day? Well at least it’s what we hope we do. ...[ more ] Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com Window Automation - the Options Will Perkins - Managing Director - SE Controls As our buildings become more intelligent, facades are being used to offer sustainable solutions for our need for well ventilated working and living spaces. In fact virtually all facades today are supplied with some form of automation system for opening vents or windows for natural ventilation and/or smoke control. Adaptive Natural Ventilation Adaptive Natural Ventilation is a simple solution offering the best air circulation with the minimum of energy input. In its basic form it is the installation of vents or windows in a building façade that open and shut automatically according to set parameters for the space within the building. These set parameters can be either based on levels of C02 for example in a classroom or conference centre, temperature, or in the instance of fire, smoke detectors which open vents to allow for a safe and smoke free exit for building occupiers. Adaptive Natural Ventilation is often coupled with smoke detection systems in our modern buildings, using the same vents and windows offers a positive saving on building costs. It is also very important to remember that Adaptive Natural Ventilation systems are not just for our new buildings. Many of our existing facades can easily be automated with little modification offering huge savings in energy costs whilst improving building comfort. How it Works Warm air rises in a building, by offering low level and high level vents or window openings, fresh air can enter from outside whilst stale air escapes at a higher level. This is how it works in its most basic form, ventilation specialists will also look at typical wind direction for the location, micro-climate, building height and building orientation. Once all this data has been gathered the correct design can be agreed for the building. How do we Achieve ‘Window Automation’? ...[ more ] In Box Letter to the Editor - Consumers caught by get-out clauses in IBGs Dear Ian This July Mr & Mrs Y got a letter from the former manager of a company that had installed their windows saying “with great regret” that the company had “ceased to trade” and they would not therefore be able to honour their remedial work. It was a courteous and considerate letter. The manager said: “We sincerely apologise for the situation you find yourself in. But we simply do not have the funds to complete the work. The phones have been disconnected. I myself do not work for X Windows any longer, but felt you deserved an explanation in order that you can make other arrangements to rectify your defects.”...[ more ] Yours sincerely
Tony Pickup In Box Letter to the Editor - The GGF recently questioned the veracity of a letter DGCOS received Dear Ian The GGF recently questioned the veracity of a letter DGCOS received from a homeowner, whose GGFi insurance claim wasn’t honoured because according to the organisation’s definition, ‘dissolved’ did not count as ‘ceased to trade’. While the homeowners have requested anonymity in the press they are happy for us to forward the original letter to any editors (as long as it isn’t published and they are not contacted) so they can see the key facts for themselves. Unfortunately this is just one of many letters and complaints we receive about industry insurance schemes. Weaselling out of what commonsense would say is a valid claim isn’t right and isn’t fair on the consumer – and it does endless damage to the industry’s reputation....[ more ] Yours sincerely
