An interesting day today, some will be going to the polling booth to put their X against their favourite from the televised Political Debates, only to find confusion, their chosen favourite’s name is not on the ballot paper. The best outcome of course, is a clear direction for the next 5 years.

The long awaited Doc L is out, has it called a halt to all the confusion, mutterings and discontent? Not really, but then it wasn’t the standards that were the problem, yes they were used to highlight the inconsistencies and the flakiness of the directions being taken. If the organisers of the standards had got it wrong, how could it be suggested they got the methods of compliance right.

8 Signs of Failing Managers (Part 2!))

Management or Market? A question that is always on the thinking MD’s mind and given that the market isn’t going to ‘save’ anyone (at least for a few years!) it has to be more important than ever to identify failing managers. Part 1 of this article looked at poor comminucators, weak leaders, those that could not change as well as the poor relationship builders and identified the tell tale indicators of failing management rather than difficult market. What else tells you you have a management problem?

1. Ineffective Task Managers

When everything is a priority then nothing is a priority. Effective task managers know how to establish priorities and make sure work gets done! They know how to say “No!” to activities that will divert them from priorities. They can see the big picture and break it down into specific tasks required to complete a project. The problem Richard Gyde of Mila Hardware and David Jennings of UAP, complain of in their letters – YouTube videos showing the quick failure of conventional security protection to withstand break-ins – is not the real problem. The problem which predated the videos is an epidemic of break-ins and the lack of protection from inadequate hardware.

Burglars don’t need lessons in how to break in to poorly protected PVC-U doors, as Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable for West Yorkshire Police made clear this year. As he told the media, homes were at risk because it took just a few seconds to disable flimsy cheap door locks. He said police had not wanted to draw attention to the issue until now because they did not want to alert criminals to the security weakness. But he said the practice was so common that the public needed to be warned. In West Yorkshire, one in four burglaries is because of these cheap locks, and in some divisions it has been suggested that as much as 40% of forced entries are now through the cylinder snapping....[ more ]
