Soundings around the country show that the long Christmas break has benefited those that had a plan, and sales are up.

Countrywide, recruitment to full employment posts is at its highest point for 2 years.

Some parts of the country appear to be having it cold with some snow, although this seems a bit subjective and in the main appears to be hype by the media in desperation for something different to talk about. It does pose the question, if the TV crews were not racing around looking for the most dramatic images, would the roads be clearer? The plus side is that for some it does enhance the motivation to ensure their home is wrapped up warm to keep the heat in.

Increasing costs - by redefining/ending Self Employment via CIS

There is a campaign to get the industry motivated behind a petition that objects to the proposed changes to the definition of ‘Self employment’ in the construction industry. e? Ultimately it is about how the cost base of the industry is structured and the perception of where the consumer will get the best job done.

The Window Industries cost base is affected in many ways, as it would mean not only companies collecting the PAYE and paying additional National Insurance (NICS) contributions, it also changes their relationship with the Window Installers. The direction of the proposals means that window installers inevitably will become employed; they would then enjoy the same pension rights as other employees, the same holiday rights, sickness benefits, paternity rights and of course come under the working time directive. Some would argue that this is a natural trend and should be expected as the political landscape of the country changes.

In real cost terms the differences are significant, for instance the time at work. The time at work will start when the Windows Installers start to load the van and include travelling to site. ...[ more ]

Dear Ian,

Roger Hartshorn makes some powerful observations on our Wigan & Leigh recycling story (The Glazine, December 15) but I must say, in the main, he has missed the point.

What we did with the single window was quite obviously a showpiece exercise to highlight what can be done – and that VEKA has the technology to do it. Along with this is the underlying message that a massive opportunity is being missed because of the prejudice about the use of recyclate in windows in the UK.

Also, I did not say this window had a smaller carbon footprint; I said it would if it could be done on an industrial scale. It should be clear to most that if such a scale could be achieved, the facilities would be created in the UK so there would be no need for anything to go to Germany. This immediately negates Roger Hartshorn’s tirade on not using local labour ...[ more ]
