In the News

Our train of thought this week is prompted by an in-box feature from Kevin Harvey, MD at Avocet, suggesting for some time now he believes ‘the news hasn’t been that bad’. At the Fenestration News we are always reviewing the subjects that appeal to our readers and yes, sometimes the way we focus attention on these go to enhancing their ranking, so inevitably we are creating a bias.

However, that said, as an indicator of trends and interest it is hard not to see where the momentum is coming from and as Kevin points out the drive in the market place is coming from companies like his. They are innovating so as to create benefit to the customer, whether this leads to a price point advantage or fulfils a need or a desire, it essentially points to the difference between one company and another.

What is clear is that those companies that concentrate on being the same or replicate the business model of others are just the followers; as a consequence they become the ones that suffer first when trends change. The price point and aim then becomes, can they offer the same cheaper.

To those that innovate, the price point is an increase in margin.

A quick scan of the news releases displayed on the Fenestration News website, shows that the new products outnumber everything else. Follow this with a review of readership activity; again it is these that head the list.

It is no coincidence then, that the most read pages are those that will lead others towards improving their own business.

In keeping with the above, the other route to success is having the right people. The only difference between a good company and a great company is the people. Chris Ball of MBA points out some of the foibles and misunderstandings that hinder this greatness showing its-self - see below.

Dear Ian,

Our politicians aren’t saying what cuts they will make after the election in case we won’t vote for them. But, whoever wins we know it will be painful.

The news isn’t all bad. The UK’s recovery seems to be underway, although it may not feel like much of a recovery for some time yet. And despite a prolonged recession and the deepest fall in demand any of us has known, far fewer firms have failed in the window industry than we feared.

Listening to our customers, I believe there are two reasons fewer firms have failed. Firstly, many have cut their labour costs and the time they spend in fabricating and installing using products that are designed to save time and labour. ...[ more ]

Effective managers do more than supervise employees. They take responsibility for ensuring that an individual succeeds, and that the team, department, or business unit achieves expected results. Effective managers are like successful coaches who develop teams that win championships year after year. Companies that are most successful are those that are most proactive when it comes to developing and managing talent within their organisations and over the years we’ve identified clear indicators of incompetent managers:-

1. Poor Communicators

The problem with communication is the illusion it has been accomplished! Communication is a two way street and some managers are great at talking but not at listening. Instead of communicating clearly whether that’s verbally in writing or indeed when using body language poor communicators often work in a vacuum. They neglect opportunities to listen to colleagues, subordinates, customers, or suppliers –even when the issue has a significant impact on these very same people.
