From the News

From REHAU we get the announcement of a tie up with Solar Windows.  This window readily offers the performance required for the Sustainable Homes/Passive House. Would this window be a good candidate to be an ‘A’ rated window? It is doubtful. Would this window provide greater energy conservation for the home owner than an ‘A’ rated window? Definitely!

" " are celebrating being as old as I feel, 34 years of paying for others to cut their losses. Fantastic record, well done Mark, Phil and the rest of the team in Stoke.

C.R. Lawrence is keeping Gary Dean busy, not only do we get new Manufacturing facilities, but they are also opening up in Italy and now we hear they have acquired Glasteknik S.Thorball Aps in Denmark.

Someone who always seems to have the same left field view point as us is Chris Ball, he discusses why the best set of trainers can keep you in the race and stop you being eaten.

Latium Building Products appoints Paul McLoughlin as C.E.O. In the same area we have Everest fitting the best with Duraflex. Spectus Systems has filed a strong set of results

Confused, wasn't that the point

Is Edgetech’s Andy Jones just flirting with Swisspacer’s Kathryn Dalgleish or is there a serious point being made? Is there an actual discussion going on, or are events outside of their control nullifying their efforts?

In a normal free trading society both points of view would have merit. It could also easily be argued that as both these products in ‘some’ applications can offer real tangible benefits to the consumer we should applaud and encourage their efforts.

This is where the chattering section of the industry, mainly the supply chain and peripheral me-to entities, are out of step with those that actually do the business. In 14 days time for the most part the ground rules for Andy & Kathryn change significantly. No longer will their companies USP have any major bearing on the commercial decision for any of their prospective customers.

As we all know, from October 1st for most component suppliers, their industry will stutter to a halt. To illustrate the situation further, if Edgetech or Swisspacer wish to compete for business with an IGU manufacturer, the decision on the any changes or additions to the IGU manufacturer’s product line up will no longer be with the managers of that business. ...[ more ]

A new way to WER's

By Andy McDowell, Pilkington National Sales Manager UK & Ireland

With the forthcoming changes to Part L of the Building Regulations 2010, Pilkington has been working hard to ensure that the industry knows how these regulations will affect their business and the sales opportunities that exist through the inclusion of Window Energy Ratings (WERs) as a method of compliance to meet these regulations. We have championed WERs since their introduction and inclusion in Part L of the Building Regulations 2006, working closely with our customers and setting up the Pilkington energiKare™ Partner scheme. The scheme was in fact designed to mirror the requirements of Window Energy Ratings and help customers to achieve compliance through this route.

With just a few weeks left to comply with the 2010 regulations we have launched the Pilkington WER V4 calculator to provide indicative thermal energy ratings, making it even easier for Pilkington customers to obtain a WER for their windows and in doing so offering a more accessible method of obtaining a WER....[ more ]

The Race – How To Avoid Getting Eaten

There is an old joke that you may well have heard, bear with me, there is a point to all this….. A cameraman and his soundman were filming a pride of lions far out on the African Veldt hidden in an isolated clump of scrub. Slowly a large male stood up sniffed the air and fixed them with a hungry look “The wind has changed” stammered the sound man and turning to his cameraman saw him strapping on some running shoes “what do you think you are doing” he nervously stammered “you’ll never outrun a fully grown lion” . The cameraman looked back and said “I don’t need to outrun the lion I just need to outrun you!” A metaphor for the window market at the moment if ever there was one.

There is probably no company, no matter what sector you choose, retail, trade, commercial or indeed systems supplier that is big enough to outrun the market so the aim must be to outrun the competition. A simple enough conclusion you would have thought but in the course of speaking with MD’s and owners we often hear the market used as a reason for the business underperforming. Of course things are difficult but they are equally difficult for everyone. The days of being able to conduct your business in a wasteful way and still make money are no longer with us and that painful truth is too much for some of your competitors… but good news if you are prepared to strap on your running shoes. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - I have bitten my tongue

Dear Ian

To date, I have bitten my tongue and not publicly taken Swisspacer's Kathryn Dalgleish to task, but following her most recent letter: "Why make it complicated?", in the interest of giving the industry FACT rather than marketing fiction, I am now compelled to put pen to paper. On Kathryn's point, "Anything that makes life more difficult, more complicated, time consuming or expensive for fabricators and installers will deter companies from benefiting from WERs. Why buy complicated or expensive machinery for the application of certain types of spacer bars when you don’t have to?" I couldn't agree more. Obviously, what Kathryn is trying to spin is that competitive products to her spacer are not as cost effective. This assertion is quite simply wrong and woefully inaccurate.

FACT: Savvy sealed unit manufacturers and fabricators understand the various ways of doing cost comparisons when it comes to IG production - short, mid and long term - but let's take the three most obvious contributors for a factual comparison:...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - In response to Andy Jones, Edgetech

Dear Ian

I have no wish to waste time entering into yet another Edgetech-initiated public tit-for-tat with Andy Jones, because of the spin, and the misleading or blatantly false information in his letter, published in Fenestration News 13.9.10. At 1,328 words I suppose it does still qualify as a letter! This will be dealt with behind closed doors.

October 1st is imminent. Our primary concern now should be to ensure companies are compliant with the new regulations and able to take advantage of the opportunities.

Swisspacer products are a simple and fast way for companies to move towards these goals. Whether choosing WERs or the U-value route, switching from aluminium spacer bar to Swisspacer is a simple change that helps companies achieve the values they need. No investment in application machinery, potentially no need to re-test to EN1279, ...[ more ]
