In their letter, CENSolutions Ltd asks are Online Calculators – a true indication? Jobs, jobs and even more jobs this week Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com How’s your year so far? From the recent feed-back we’ve had in conversation with Industry, this year has been extremely successful, hard and tough work yes, but rewarding when it all comes together once again. As Gary Player said “The more I practice the better I get” which sits equally well with those that drive the Fenestration Industry. This response in itself is quite amusing when you look at all the predictions from 12 months ago, those wanting to tell the industry what’s ahead and act as if they had the only panacea, how well did they do? They created reports, created fear, grabbed the headlines and why did they do that? It’s simple; they had something to sell – an irony, of course. Are they ever right? No, of course not and the reason they are never right is always the same - unforeseen circumstances changed the predictions. But of course by now they have your money. Trouble on the road ahead? Not really, just situations where solutions for growth need to be found. Not least is the lack of movement of people, good people are not moving, they are staying put. Yet there isn’t a company out there that hasn’t an opening or isn’t crying out for the right people. From what is being said, recruitment and development seem to be the keys to unlock the future. In a week or so we have one section of the industry seeing a chance to grab a breather and recharge, while the main driving force behind it (the industry) is gearing for one of the most active sales periods of the year. The homeowner enjoys a mini respite from their normal chore, is relaxed and with time on their hands and able to frame the year ahead. For most Salesmen this means 6 weeks of better than normal selling opportunities in little more than a week. For the Installation Company it is about securing the fitting diary up until the end of February. The only question is whether the lead generation is in place to capitalise on this. From what we have seen in previous years, the managers of the supply chain Companies do not rest over this festive season either. The phone might have stopped ringing, but that means there is time to engage the creative thoughts, come up with new formulations and directions. No one excited by this Industry ever stops. As for the Fenestration News, we will still be here as usual. In Box Letter to the Editor - Online Calculators – a true indication? Dear Ian, Online Calculators – a true indication? Now that the Building Regulations have been implemented, companies know the two methods of compliance are u-values and Window Energy Ratings. Whichever method you choose, you have the option of proving compliance with an online calculator. There are various calculators available stating that they should to be accurate to ±2 points on the WER scale. We carry out actual simulations at our in-house test facility in Stafford that give 100% accurate results. When comparing the results from an online calculator and an actual simulation for the same window we have found that in some instances the difference is a lot more than ±2. In some instances there has been up to 6 points difference in the results! This is the worst case scenario but it’s such a big difference and could of course mean that someone who believes they have a compliant ‘C’ rated window as demonstrated by the online calculator may actually be selling a ‘D’ rated window in reality....[ more ] Yours sincerely
Wayne Rogerson In Box Letter to the Editor - Malcolm Kemp, Inagas Dear Ian Since the roll out of the legislation changes in October, we have seen a large number of businesses looking to adjust their offering to ensure they demonstrate compliance - whether that be via a Window Energy Rating or U-value - but all with a common goal, to spend as little as possible and ensure the changeover is hassle free. There are a variety of ways in which production can be altered, but most either require a big upfront investment, or the introduction of huge changes to processes that cannot easily be implemented. Ensuring the right decision is made at the right time to ensure the longevity of your business, is becoming increasingly difficult in this ever changing market....[ more ]
Yours sincerely In Box Letter to the Editor - DGCOS responds to smear campaign Dear Ian Last week sponsors of the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) received an unmarked plain brown envelope. It contained what was meant to be highly damaging information attempting to discredit the scheme and deter sponsors from supporting it. On Monday sponsors got another unmarked letter in the post. It was unsigned, but sent by ‘Anonomous’ (deliberately misspelled to put us off the scent perhaps?) claiming to be on behalf of ‘a number of genuine consumer organisations’. Other letters are probably on their way. The revelations weren’t particularly revealing. Most of the accusations had already been answered on the industry blogs or answered comprehensively at the DGCOS Conference. Some accusations were based on a misunderstanding of how the Ombudsman works and of the structure of DGCOS....[ more ] Yours sincerely Tony Pickup, Founder of DGCOS Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com Senior Architectural Systems- advertisement
