Who says the industry has a bad reputation?

If you are expecting to learn something, gain greater insight or find support on how the industry should go forward together, you have come to the wrong place. We love ironies, have conversations that you will either understand or just not get, at times we leave it to others to do the explaining. What we enjoy is having a wry look at the environment around us and smiling.

This week we have been pointed in the direction of a number of sources that relate to what seems to be angst by some, on the way they believe the Industry portrays itself in the selling situation. They all have a view along the line of the ‘Big bad Salesman’, ‘the Cowboys’ and generally how, from their perspective, the Industry gets a bad reputation. Conveniently forgetting business and therefore sales is about what sets companies apart, if every company gets shackled with the same standards and conformity they are left with nothing, not even an industry. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Tony Walsh, Chairman, Freefoam Plastics

On January 15th, 2010 you published a letter from Sean Cockett, Kestrel.

Under the guise of clarifying what products can or can’t be used, he managed to confuse your readers, mixing facts we know and can verify, with material inaccuracies which support his argument but are not true.

He is campaigning for Calcium Organic and against Lead and Tin, although I believe – we await correction - his Celuform brand continues to use some Tin stabilisers, and he might clarify whether his company continues to extrude hollow soffits based on Lead.

Kestrel may be the largest manufacturer of calcium organic PVC-UE. But a larger part of the market has chosen otherwise. Both Freefoam and Swish have switched to OctylTin, a better, more advanced stabiliser for cellular foam. ...[ more ]

Letter to the editor - Martin Randall, Fighting Back With Facts

Dear Ian

A timber enthusiast recently added a post on the Renegade Conservatory Guy blog to rubbish PVC-U. People are all too quick to point the finger at PVC-U and repeat factual inaccuracies and smears. If the comments were made about people we’d have them in court but as it is about a material it’s up to all of us to stand up and put them right. The longer a lie goes unchallenged the more it is believed!

PVC-U, UPVC or PVC does not give off fumes nor does it leach into the ground whether buried or not. PVC-U is a particularly inert material. Once it is manufactured into profile it lasts, and lasts, and lasts. Many of the windows installed in the 1980s by Local Authorities are being replaced with double glazed frames because they were single glazed to save money. Others are being replaced and upgraded so they are more secure or have better insulation, or because the hardware breaks down and is obsolete. But the PVC-U itself just goes on and on. ...[ more ]
