Having received a prompt by Charles Greensmith with his letter injecting some common sense into the long running spat between what could be seen as industry leaders, it poses the question of how some people define their company’s unique selling points (USP).

We all know the jargon; it is the USP that defines the difference between companies. However, knowing the jargon is one thing, understanding what it really means is something else.

A USP serves no purpose unless it goes on to translate into customer benefits, it is about creating the reason to buy from one company and not another. A USP is generally reasoned to be a clear difference that provides a defined benefit to the consumer. While arguing about something that improves the well-being of the workers shows a caring employer, we have no one in this very public discussion going on to define what that then means to the consumer. Without that definition it is just background noise, meaningless and blocked out.

Producing the latest ‘T’ shirt or sports trainer in the sweat shops of the world is something that most right minded people are appalled at, but these are the same people who buy these products, why? It can only be that they see a benefit. The USP is the product and its value to the customer; it’s as simple as that.

Occasionally, just occasionally, along comes a larger than life character that many people have met, benefitted from and would call a friend. Whether it has been getting the best out of promoting a business or having someone around to do the laundry as you peddle across the USA, Dave Bruxton (Broco) is just such a man. Recently Dave has been doing what he previously suggested others do, and doing it successfully; Bohle has recognised this and has announced his appointment to Managing Director of Bohle UK. Congratulations Dave.

I have been following the Calcium Zinc/Lead/Tin debate about the composition of PVC with great astonishment in recent weeks. Watching the ‘so called’ leaders of our competition slang it out like Children in the Playground - about who knows best, who is the cleverest, and who can quote ‘Reach’ in their favour has been plainly ridiculous.

For 16 years as a distributor with GAP dealing with thousands of customers on a daily basis, you quickly learn what’s important – Service – Product Quality – Marketing. Do customers really care what stabilisers are used, as long as it’s not Lead? Personally I would say no.. ...[ more ]

BBC One’s Rogue Traders challenged the Government endorsed Trustmark scheme

On Monday 8th March BBC One’s Rogue Traders challenged the Government endorsed Trustmark scheme. Millions of viewers saw it award Yorkshire based roofer Munro Solutions, a Trustmark trusted trader, with its own more appropriate Disgust Mark.

Alerted by viewer complaints, the programme’s presenters Matt Allwright and Dan Penteado filmed the company in the act of damaging a roof, deliberately creating a hole in it, exaggerating problems and inflating the cost of the job. They also flouted Health and Safety and lied to the customer. A basically sound roof requiring perhaps a day’s work was quoted at £5,300 to fix or £14,500 to replace. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor from Andy Jones.

Dear Ian

I was talking to an installer recently when something rather worrying came to light. He was a professional, proactive and successful installer, using all the latest technology to give him an ‘A’ rated window. And he was marketing this fact to give him the edge over his competitors. When I questioned why he hadn’t used the British Fenestration Rating Council’s energy rating label however, he explained he didn’t have one. He didn’t realise he needed to get his window rated by the BFRC to achieve a valid ‘A’ rating and thought it was enough to have the right configuration of components.

I’m not knocking this installer because I would question whether or not it is his fault that he didn’t know the facts, but it’s worrying to think he had been selling his windows under false pretences, without even realising it. Since having this conversation I have asked around some more and found he’s not the only one with this misconception. ...[ more ]
