Next big marketing tool for the industry..?

Last Thursday saw the DGCOS hold an event to outline what could turn out to be the next big marketing tool for the industry, a genuine replacement for the momentum generated by WER’s since the GGF killed that project off.

The theme behind the DGCOS story is that they can provide protection for the consumer. The practicalities behind this is that if company ‘A’ has their man sitting in someone’s home with DGCOS behind them and they come up against company ‘B’ sans consumer protection, then company ‘B’ is somewhat on the back foot.

As we all know this makes it more difficult for those companies that are not members of similar schemes to achieve their goals.

The sheer numbers that attended the DGCOS event shows the interest from the industry in finding that edge, that something, that bit extra that will allow them to outpace the competition. As Nick Dutton of Doors-Stop International said during the ‘on the couch’ session, he had the feeling that there were more companies in attendance at the event than have been turning up to some of the recent trade shows. This also seemed to play out with the activity around the sponsors display booths, genuine interplay between them and prospective customers.

Two recently published research reports show that while the recovery seems to be underway the industry is not out of the woods yet. Palmer Market Research says the market has fallen by 11% and is likely to decline further until 2013, while Plimsoll reports that the last year has been turbulent for the industry.

However, we must remember that we are still part of a multi-billion pound industry and there are still some good stories in the market despite the persistent gloom. Finding new business in a shrinking market is a real challenge but growth is still possible and for some business is booming ...[ more ]

A few years ago, Ultraframe and Burnden were locked in a costly legal battle over intellectual property rights (IP) that severely damaged both companies. The battle also starved the conservatory industry of the innovation and resources it needed to develop and grow.

The companies have recovered some of their lost momentum but they are not what they were. The industry has not recovered. The market as a whole suffered the loss of all those windows and doors. At its peak, frames for conservatories amounted to around 30% of the total window and door market. Customers also suffered poorer service and support. Many were permanently weakened.
