The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. In the News The election has been and gone, the ‘talking heads’ have been put back in the box. For those that deal in the real world nothing has changed, there is the inevitable new twist, the new challenge, and these will be different again tomorrow - that’s life. In a productive industry the only thing that matters is the next sale, putting that into perspective really means the next lead, sales enquiry, and next new contact. We have the ‘retail price index’ hitting 5.3%, unemployment just passing 2.5million, which is up by 279,000 over the year and the highest since 1994. The UK deficit has gone over £160 billion and we have a massive debt unseen in peace time, all coupled with a declining UK trade balance. So doom and gloom then. That depends on where your thinking is, the usual suspects are wringing their hands and seeking solace with other like minded people, others have already moved on. Prices going up mean better margins, the employment figures in reality show there are over 28 million people working and earning. The deficit, a lot people believe that it will be something someone else will be paying, not them, and they could be right. Most of course, do not recognise that the deficit and debt are two different things. That’s why in our industry we get ‘phoenixing’, first you run at a loss, and then you lose the debts. The astute Window Company – where are they, they are already advertising ‘beat the VAT increases’, they realise the only thing that matters is the next sales contact. Exposing yourself to the next sale trumps all other theories. Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com In recent weeks, through our letters pages, there has been a welcome conversation going on from the hardware suppliers, Richard Gyde-MILA, Kevin Harvey-Avocet and David Jennings UAP as to the appropriate way to act in informing the public to the problem of ‘lock bumping’ and other ways used to defeat locking devices. As an outside observer who is not fully up to speed on the finer details of the subject, there is some logic that says as ‘lock bumping’ was identified back in 1928 and the solutions have been around for some time, something has been amiss for years in getting the message out. The consensus from our contributors on this subject is that it is now the time to update the standards. Maybe it is not critical for all locks to offer the same degree of protection, but it is right that the consumer is aware of the relative abilities of the locks they choose. Doc ‘L’ is with us and as pointed out by Marcus Springer of REHAU it still allows for the more sophisticated progressive companies to stay with the method that will ultimately drive the industry and market towards the ‘carbon neutral home’ . While this for technical reason may not be fully achievable with the existing housing stock, it does permit the consumer to adopt products that have this end in mind and allow them to play their full part in our energy saving future. A bon voyage to Clifford Rankin - The Friends of Clifford Rankin are pleased to announce that on the 21st June 2010 there will be an informal lunch gathering at Glaziers Hall, London, in joyous remembrance of our old 'shipmate' Cliff. In Box Letter to the Editor - Markus Springer, REHAU Window Division Dear Ian Having been one of the most outspoken critics of the proposal to make Window Energy Ratings the only means of compliance with the revised Building Regulations, I would like to put on record how pleased I am that the government has listened to people like me and not gone down that route ...[ more ].
Markus Springer In Box Letter to the Editor from Wayne Rogerson, CENSolutions Dear Ian, Naturally, as the revised Building Regulations guidance documents, or Approved Document L and F effective from the 1st October this year, have finally been published, we’ll now see every man and his dog jumping on the band wagon claiming they’re the best people to help you through the process. In reality, what companies actually need now are the facts, and best placed to provide these facts, are the people who’ve been helping companies prepare for these revisions for years ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Wayne Rogerson, CENSolutions Ltd In Box Letter to the Editor - Simon Mercer, Signo Dear Ian As a surface coatings specialist Signo is pleased with the growing awareness and profile of easy clean protection and of course we welcome open and subjective comparisons on performance from our competitors. Sincerely Simon Mercer, Director, Signo Ltd In Box Letter to the Editor - Richard Gyde, Mila Hardware Dear Ian, I read Kevin Harvey of Avocet’s response to my letter bemoaning the recklessness of some of our competitors in posting cylinder snapping videos on the internet, but I stand by my view that hardware manufacturers who are seeking to protect homeowners’ security should not be showcasing methods of forced entry to criminals...[ more ].
