The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 15,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. In the News A busy week, the industry is back up to speed with a truckload of news releases, and 11 jobs on offer. On a sombre note, George Williams the founder of Anglian Windows has died at the age of 82. Des Sharratt the founder of Business Micros at the age of 66 has also died. The Get Britain Building (GBB) campaign suggests that the building industry has been in recession for the last 22months. Which is strange when the powers that be made a big play on how taxpayer’s money was to be used to build our way to a brighter future? Over at Proskills their findings are similar At Liniar they a reporting that sales are rocketing, and Conservatory Outlet sales are set to rise with a focus on good lead generation. The Home Builders Federation (HBF) and the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) are joining in the campaign to ensure that company bosses still have the flexibility to grow their businesses as market conditions dictate. Kevin Harvey, MD, at Avocet reminds us that security is still an issue. As does UAP Sales Director John Cross. Thanks to the highlighting of the problem of lock bumping a while back by David Jennings of UAP, the locks market has got on board with answers. British Plastics Federation has appointed Martin Randall as deputy chairman of marketing for the Windows Group. Roackdoor gets the cream. Parkside launches Alu-Timber. Roto have introduced a new lock with ESP. Thermal imagining is now the vogue with offerings from Anglian/GGF and Sash UK. Freefoam and Kestral discuss each in their own way the alternatives to lead as a stabaliser. Is energy saving still the bedrock of the industry? Once again Andy Jones of Edgetech has opened the door for comment. This of course could be seen by some as a distraction on our part from the message he was hoping to get across. The message is that the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has upped the criteria for being able to display the ‘Energy Saving Recommended’ label, all well and good. The implication is that in round terms there are now more than 2,000 separate window companies achieving the Glass & Glazing Federations(BFRC) energy rating of ‘C’ or greater, which is probably news to the GGF/BFRC, so the standards are to be raised. The contradiction, the Energy Saving Trust, at the ‘Energy Efficiency in Focus – Revisited’ seminar, stated this labelling is not for window companies but for window frame manufacturers who in turn can’t pass it down to their customers. So does it matter what they (EST) say or do? If they have changed this stipulation then they have forgotten to let the industry know. Energy ratings are a lovely subject full of ironies, contradictions, and it could be argued misinformation, as such it sets us of in playful mode. ...[ more ] Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com In Box The Facts about PVC Stabilisers Dear Ian, 2010, and the start of another year, which will hopefully bring a less challenging economic backdrop for our sector. However, it’s important that as an industry we are also aware of other challenges facing us over 2010 and beyond. Hence, the reason for this letter. As the UK’s largest manufacturers of calcium organic stabilised PVC-UE building products, I feel it’s partly our responsibility to try to clarify to your readers at least one of these challenges - The facts about the latest environmental and legislative developments as they affect PVC stabilisers; especially as there appears to be some misunderstanding circulating in the market! I understand how the combination of technical minutiae and jargon associated with European Directives isn’t the most immediately inspiring subject, but it is nonetheless critical that as an industry we understand the implications of the current and planned developments to protect and future proof our businesses ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Dr Sean Cockett, Technical Director, Kestrel In Box Letter to the Editor - Kathryn Dalgleish, Swisspacer Dear Ian, On almost every measure you can think of 2009 was a difficult year. But Window Energy Ratings was not one of them. There are no official volume statistics to show just how fast WERs growth was, but by the end of 2009 we finished nearly 500% ahead of 2008. This level of growth, on numbers that were in the millions in the UK and Ireland alone, is strong growth indeed. Yes, our market share increased rapidly as we took share from rival warm edge spacers, but the market stormed ahead too. ...[ more ] Yours sincerely
Kathryn Dalgleish In Box Letter to the Editor - changes to Energy Saving Recommended Dear Ian We should all by now be aware of the proposed amendments to Approved Document L of the UK Building Regulations, due to take effect in October, which will require all replacement windows to carry a BFRC Window Energy Rating of ‘C’ or better to achieve compliance. As the industry prepares to meet this stringent challenge we receive news from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) that it is ‘upping the ante’ even more. As of October 2010 the performance requirement for any companies looking to register for ‘Energy Saving Recommended’ status and the right to display the well known blue triangle ESR logo will be raised from the current ‘C’ rating to ‘B’ ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Andy Jones, Managing Director, Edgetech In Box Letter to the editor - Kevin Harvey Dear Ian There is more than one big story in 2010. WERs are a big sales opportunity but it isn't the easiest sell and most of the industry have got to organise themselves first to get the product and the testing done to take advantage of it. But, security is one of the public's top concerns. It is an easy sell and the solution is available now. Recently Sir Norman Bettison, West Yorkshire's police chief, warned that flimsy door locks that could be disabled within a few seconds are the cause of a major crime wave. Burglars who target euro-profile locks are often intent on stealing the keys to top of the range cars. He said: "About one in four of all burglaries in West Yorkshire are because of cheap euro-profile locks which are used extensively in PVC-U doors ...[ more ] Yours sincerely
