From the News

There is a rumour, a big rumour, doing the rounds that some members of the glass & glazing industry have been showing up unexpectedly in the West Midlands this week. It is suggested that the only reason for this is that Camelot let it slip that the winning ticket for their biggest ever lotto draw was purchased in the area and is missing.

Buying cheap - who can really be said to be the victim?

Our in-box this week has 3 contributions with a similar thread and in their own way express quotations that every Salesman learns in training –

'It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the things it was bought to do….’ John Ruskin (1819-1900)

Logically we should follow this up with –

‘There is hardly anything in the world that some man can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey.’ John Ruskin (1819-1900)

What is strange is we all know the meaning of these quotes, yet we all continue to fall into the same traps, and make similar mistakes. In some ways we could point to this happening as a result of conditioning by the Government and Media. They point to a paternalistic society where it is in their interest to give the impression that there is always someone else to blame, and someone else to pay for our mistakes; after all it can never be our fault. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Bygone Installations Essex Ltd comes to the rescue!

Dear Ian

Caroline Palmer and Sean Marten, both 27, had just bought and moved into their first home, in Chelmsford. Saving to get married and wanting their first house to be perfect, they set about painting and decorating, but knew they’d have to replace the awful “double glazing” especially as the house had been disfigured with ugly casement frames.

Wanting to reinstate the period look of their Victorian terraced house, they set about finding a reputable sash window manufacturer. Being IT savvy, they soon found a web site that suggested they cut out the middleman, one that could price jobs over the internet without having to have a rep spending hours demonstrating why his products were better than anyone else’s. Perfect, they thought.

Sizes were emailed, and prices sent back by return (along with pdf brochures of great looking sash windows) and at a price they could just about afford. So they confirmed their interest and awaited the arrival of the surveyor to take manufacturing sizes and the 25% deposit ...[ more ]

Letter to the editor - benefits of value engineering

Dear Ian,

In boom times rising costs were absorbed by relatively comfortable margins. But rising raw material prices have eroded industry margins and there is a limit to the increases which can be passed on. In order to reduce costs, companies have started to value engineer their products.

Value engineering means that companies substitute expensive ingredients in their product with cheaper ones which they feel will behave and perform in a similar way. But take too much out and the performance of the product, a door handle for example, starts to suffer. You might not see it at first. But eventually users notice it doesn’t perform as well as the original. The benefits of value engineering however belong to the manufacturer, and the cost to the customer who gets less for his money. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Too Price Dependent?

Dear Ian

As the world’s largest manufacturer of PVC-U and PVC-UE building products, Kestrel conducted an independent research study to ascertain if the width and depth of the product range held by any one stockist had any relation to price. We found that customers carrying a wider deeper range were enjoying better sales prices. ...[ more ]

Building Regulation requirements is one thing but…

Dear Ian

As a leading player in verifying WERs and the inspection provider for FENSA ,the BBA windows team have read with great interest the flurry of items on WERs and the FENSA solution to Part L. It has to be realised that meeting Building Regulation requirements (which is what FENSA is about) is one thing but getting an edge in the market place (what WERs provide) is another. fortunately much of the market seems to agree as not a day goes by here without a request for a WER coming in ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Danny Williams of Pioneer…

Dear Ian

Reading Danny Williams’ letter in Fenestration News, I do feel for him if his sole reason for getting WERs was compliance to new regulations. WERs was marketed as the only route to compliance until U-values were included in April as a means to comply in the Regulations. But the point Danny and others miss is that WERs is an effective marketing tool. Achieving compliance with WERs is important but incidental. ...[ more ]
