From the News

Announcement from The Promac Group:

It is with heartfelt sorrow that I must inform you that Derek Bonnard, Managing Director of The Promac Group, sadly passed away at the weekend after a short illness. The news has come with great shock and loss to me and the team at Promac and naturally our thoughts are with Derek’s family at this time. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends throughout the window and glass industry, an industry that he has been a part of from the very beginning.

An engineer by trade, Derek helped shape the industry with a number of major installations over his career - which spanned over 30 years. Throughout the UK & Ireland he would personally take responsibility by being actively involved in developing machinery ranges to fit all production requirements with our Italian and German suppliers. Machinery gave him the opportunity to exhibit and he was never happier when it came to trade exhibitions. Not only delighted to bring to the forefront of the industry new technology and innovation, but also to enjoy the company of our existing and future customers and suppliers - nearly all of which would become friends. Never wanting to let anybody down, Derek cared passionately about people - a trait that made him a true Gentleman in business and pleasure and forms the corner stone of our business today.

Chairman of The Promac Group

September the 1st.

Just looking at that date is frightening, where did the rest of the year go?

The date also prompted us to carry out some housekeeping on the databases that run the Fenestration News website. We limit our news pages 'page-view count' to show just the last 12 months otherwise the database itself gets a bit too unwieldy for a web based solution.

We now have passed a milestone, with over a million visits just to the news section (to be exact 1,029,523) in the last 12 months. However, I am not sure if we are surprised as we always take note of the weekly trends, which are always encouraging.

In addition, in the same period there have been more than 230,000 searches on our Company Information section. This should be an important reminder to all to ensure that contact details for your company are up to-date.

The real point here is, marketing is always tough and exploiting every avenue is the surest way to beat the competition. There is a lot to be gained from the internet as so much of it offers good value, a few minutes of time here and there is sometimes all it takes to reap rewards. One thing not to miss though is that there is still a high degree of 'Netiquette' required to extract the best from others. Within that, reciprocal arrangements are the surest way to develop a solid presence.

Improving your presence on the internet via the Fenestration News can be as simple as ensuring we have your correct phone number, web site address, logo, GGF membership etc. Or better still make sure everyone knows of your enterprise with a news release.

”…Treat Those Two Impostors Both The Same”

Triumph and disaster are of course the two impostors as those of you who were paying attention (and are old enough to have been taught some Kipling) in English Lit will know. Looking back as we sat bored and longing for 4.30 I for one paid scant attention at the time to the lesson in the lesson but variability is one of the issues we all wrestle with whatever business we now run.

Variability in manufacturing is something that is the enemy of efficiency, machines or operations that can produce at say 100 units an hour and vary in actual performance from 50 to 100 affect all the operations downstream substantially. Co variant dependency for the mathematicians amongst you tells us that the mean capacity of subsequent operations is dependant on the mean capacity of preceding operations. Planning and effecting improvement is made more difficult by wild swings in performance, it makes focus tricky and results unpredictable....[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Vic De Costa in response to Andy Jones

Dear Ian

I agree with Andy Jones (Window Energy Ratings being diluted, Fenestration News, August 12 2011) that companies who don’t invest in capacity will struggle to serve their customers when the window market returns to growth.

We are one of the pockets of real growth Andy refers to in his letter. The general adoption of U values,,...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Wilie Kerr, MD, Roseview Windows

Dear Ian,

Why installers should target the higher end of the market

Becoming more profitable in today’s market is a tough task for installers With VAT set at 20%, debt levels rising and the cost of living steadily going up, lower to middle earners simply have less disposable income and this has had a serious knock-on effect on the window industry.

But while there may be slowdown in volume at the lower end of the market, homeowners at the top-end are continuing to spend. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Reply to Roseview Windows 26.08.11

Dear Ian,

Wilie Kerr, Roseview Windows (Letter to the Editor 24.08.011), says it’s a tough market, but there are opportunities in vertical sliders for installers who are trained to install them.

Vertical sliders is a growth market, but so are A rated windows, bi-fold doors, Georgian bar windows, colour and conservatories with the right glass. We’re also seeing an increasing demand for aluminium windows and doors. All these products give installers significant opportunities to make a difference to their bottom line with higher value sales...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Jerry Webb, CDW Systems

Dear Ian,

Unless you have been stranded on a desert island for the past year, you can’t have failed to notice the hype surrounding bi-folding doors. Due to the ‘improve rather than move’ trend, sales of bi-folding doors have soared in the domestic market as consumers look to ‘bring the outside in’ and create more space and light within their property.....[ more ]
