An industry under pressure

It would not have escaped people's attention that the government has reduced the feed-in tariffs for renewable energy projects. To some there is shock horror, they need government money to survive. To others it is just a reflection of the success being enjoyed by a subsidised industry.

Those that are disappointed seem to think it was a given that they should have access to government money. This is part of the problem - government money? Governments don't as a rule have money of their own. What governments have is the advantage of being able to take from the successful earners and give it to others - its taxpayers money governments play with. In other words the house in the street with all those lovely new PV panels on their roof, they got there because everyone else in the street had money taken from their pockets to fund their neighbours access to cheap energy.

Logic says in the coming years it is the same amount of taxpayer money still being used to fund the renewable industry, just that the pot is being shared between more and more people. You could say it has been a successful 'seed corn' operation, and now we are getting close to the time that pay back will begin....[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Alan Fielder’s letter in Fenestration News (17.10.11)

Dear Ian

Alan Fielder (Fenestration News, 17.10.11) makes a good point. Consumers want to reduce their energy bills which have been rising steeply.

They’ve been warned they’ll rise even more in future. Together with general inflation and caps on earnings this is hurting, and influencing their behaviour.

A recent national survey of homeowners conducted by Opinium Research and commissioned by DGCOS found that the top reason* for people replacing windows and doors is to reduce their energy bills (61%). This new-found focus on saving energy can only grow as the Green Deal is promoted and building regulations are tightened....[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Alan Fielder

Dear Ian,

I was interested to read Alan Fielder’s letter concerning triple glazing in the UK and the ‘complications’ it brings with it.

While it may have been true in the past to say that generally the UK climate isn’t cold enough to warrant the extra cost/weight of triple glazed units, rising energy costs and the extremely cold winters we have experienced recently might say otherwise.

The fact is, increased comfort in our homes and offices is worth paying for in a one-off installation if it brings lower energy costs for years to come.

The experience of GED in North America, where the winters are that much harsher than in the usually temperate UK is that increased comfort is definitely worth having, and is the reason why we introduced Warm Edge technology to begin with....[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Bruce Morley

Dear Ian,

Bruce Morley’s letter to Fenestration News (14/10/11) had some good advice for installers. The economy has been hard on companies that have not invested in machinery and people.

In the last twelve months Crystal has invested in two Rotox CNC Corner Cleaners and a new Stuga Flowline machine to increase our capacity and make sure we don’t hold our customers back with our quality or service. We’ve also recruited a new customer support team, added to our sales team, appointed a new Financial Director and developed the senior management team.

But investing in machinery and people is not enough. It is essential to support customers with on time in full - and on quality – deliveries, but in a market that is more than 30% down on its peak four or five years ago, ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Fenestration News Bulletin leader

Dear Ian,

I couldn’t agree more with your leader in Fenestration News 6th October. It describes conservatories perfectly.

You ask why the industry lacks its former dynamism: where is the fresh blood, and fresh perspectives?

Ten years ago in a complacent market, Ultraframe lost its dominant position to a mix of innovation, fast service and marketing. Then there was a legal dogfight between Ultraframe and K2. Like many legal fights it was expensive and distracting. It knocked the stuffing out of them and left nothing to invest in new products and developing the market...[ more ]
