All holidayed out?

All holidayed out? In some ways it feels like it, it’s as if we have just had the Christmas break again but this time with lots of sunshine. A headache for the supply chain, not too great for installations, but for getting the Order it couldn’t be better, the equivalent of 2 extra weekends with the consumer at home and relaxed. Judging by the amount of installation vans from the majors running around at the weekends, it was also a good time to catch up on the ‘private work’.

Just in case you missed it - another extended break coming to a weekend near you soon.

Hacking

Ian Sims, MD of Double R, reminds us all as to the dangers of ‘Hacking’ to a business. ‘It couldn’t happen to me!’ Oh yes it can. Just think who in your office opens the external emails, then how many of those emails are from unverified sources. Open one ‘attachment’ and the damage is done, that is all that is needed to trigger access to your network from those outside and you won’t know it happened until sometime later.

Ongoing the convenience and the efficiency of the Internet has helped to streamline business, yet at the same time exposes it to abuse.

If you can remember your ‘password’, then it is not hard for others to figure it out. (A change to the likes of ‘keypass’ helps).

This situation is not going to change any time soon, think of the recent events at Sony (personal details, account information and emails of millions hacked). Then over at Microsoft they have made it so that the up and coming Windows 8 can put the operating system ‘personalization’, ‘applications settings’, and ‘credentials’ in the ‘cloud’, meaning your computer wouldn’t even have to be turned on for someone to be you.

There is only one secret - that is the one you keep to yourself. The internet provides the tools to circumvent all other secrets. Social media outlets while a great promotion tool, can also be used to damage business credibility (as those that follow these things in the Fenestration Industry will have seen recently). More dangerously this medium has a habit of exposing those little snippets that provide the trail for any hacker/thief.

Put another way, announce you are going on holiday. Then when you get back you find you have been burgled, should you be surprised?

Marketing

Following up on recent trends, it is clear that the forward thinkers have seen the need and the desire to become more relevant to the consumer when it comes to product performance. Adding to the recent activities by others we have more companies this week joining the move to ‘passive house’ standards of performance for windows.

Let’s hope this time out this can remain as an industry driver and maintain a degree of ‘unique’ in marketing terms. As we have seen in recent years the move to conformity has been an instrument of neutralising efforts, not a tool for growth.

Letter to the Editor, Hacking - Ian Sims MD, Double R

Dear Ian,

I have read with interest some articles in the trade and indeed national media about hacking and wanted to share my experience with your readers. It’s not my intention to scaremonger but I hope that by raising awareness of the issue it may save even one company from the stress we had to go through as a result of having our system hacked.

Double R manufactures sealed units and conservatory roofs from a 19,200 sq ft operation in Wellingborough and as any other manufacturer with any level of automation in their production process will appreciate, we rely on software to run our business. As a result we have invested in what we still believe to be the leading software in our industry....[ more ]

Yours sincerely,

Ian Sims, Managing Director, Double R
