Up and running..

Out of the starting blocks and already on the way to building on last year’s achievements appears to be the majority view in recent soundings.

At the same time some find it hard to comprehend how this can be happening. In a similar vein the mainstream media has had the retail high street doing well while also reporting sales as being down. Sales are up because of the rise in VAT, sales are down because of the weather or recession. Which is true? It depends on who is promoting the story.

Some people make decisions on what is being reported in the media, others tread their own path. It’s a case of either being comfortable measuring up to predictions of others, or mapping out how it would be possible to cause things to happen on your own terms. In a more cynical view some are only ever sold to, while others do the selling.

Getting real about things whether it is the Media or the Government it is clear they are trying to derive their own livelihood by getting you to buy into their ideas. There is nothing benevolent about any of their offerings.

All industry is the same, growth, therefore survivability, happens as part of a plan. In the Fenestration Industry to the best of my knowledge composite doors have been available for 30 years or more. To some this has been 30 years of plodding along just supplying those that have sought out the product. It wasn’t a product waiting for a market; it was a marketplace with a need, where the product was hidden from the consumer.

The availability of composite doors has changed dramatically in recent years; they can now be sourced and supplied in a manner more conducive to the needs of the market. Is the market for Composite Doors as a result of trend or of a need being fulfilled by those with vision who are making it easy for the consumer to buy?

Even in recent weeks we have seen old and some might say respected industry leaders giving up on composite doors. The appearance given is that they never really understood the ‘market place’; they had all the elements but never quite the item itself. Nearly there, but not quite, similar to supplying welded window frames without the hardware or beads. Another missed opportunity seemingly from not thinking it through.

The trends for 2011, more on energy – conservation and generation, similar to the composite door the market has been around a long time but not quite wrapped up into a cohesive package for consumer delivery. The ‘Passive House’ window has started to register at least within the industry, and has the beauty of doing what it ‘says on the tin’.

The interest ahead is in seeing those that will create, evolve, as opposed to seeing those that will just follow.

Letter to the Editor - Acquisition - from Nick Dutton

Dear Ian,

I’d like to congratulate Distinction Doors on its merger with Evergreen, making it the largest distributor of door blanks to the industry, and now sole UK distributor of the Taiwanese Formosa Plastics’ Nan Ya slab.

But while it may be the largest distributor of door slabs and components neither Distinction nor Evergreen make composite doors. Drew Wright’s claim to have ‘unequivocally confirmed its position as the UK market leader of the composite door market’ is blurring the distinction between him and his customers - unless Drew is hinting at a strategic change in direction? ...[ more ]

I’d give our forecast four and a half out of five says Freefoam’s chairman

Over the past three years, the Bank of England and leading economists have taken a lot of stick for their unreliable forecasts. Almost all of them have been wrong. Compared to them, the record of some of our own industry forecasts are much better. One of the best this year, by Tony Walsh, Chairman of Freefoam Building Products, the leading roofline and rainwater products manufacturer, recorded five major predictions for the year at the start of 2010, and added another five for 2011 at http://freefoamblog.com/2011-interesting-times/.

Tony comments: “Reviewing your forecasts is a useful exercise, although it can be humbling at times. I’d give our predictions four and a half out of five for 2010. Resin prices rose strongly throughout the year. Although I predicted falls in between the rises, what we actually saw were pauses in the ongoing flow of news alerts. Shortages meant many producers were given allocated supplies which limited their bargaining power. The situation was made worse by money grabbing exercises. Premium products were sold at bargain basement prices...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Jeremy Clarkson taken to task

Dear Ian.

The Wood Window Alliance and British Woodworking Federation took Top Gear presenter and journalist Jeremy Clarkson to task in a statement on 18 December for his ‘acerbic criticism’ of wooden sash windows.

But, in a world polluted with political spin and double talk it’s refreshing to hear someone like Jeremy Clarkson just tell it like it is.

The target for his exuberant blunt honesty in his Sunday Times column this time were homeowners who chose products on the basis of perceived good taste instead of actual performance. He illustrated the point by talking about the refined prejudice about PVC-U windows. His own wood windows “rattle when there is a breeze, leak when there is rain and jam solid when there is sun. They were beautiful to behold, ...[ more ]
