Nothing is truly fair

Growth, stagnation, recession, are the words real or do they just sell a story? In a similar vein we have the IMF predicting the World economy is entering a 'dangerous new phase' . Yet time and time again the IMF, just like all crystal ball gazers, appears to get it's predictions wrong. It could of course be suggested that people react and adapt to these warnings, so the original criteria changes and the prophecy never happens.

What shouldn't be lost is that the sponsors of organisations such as the IMF also have an agenda and it is their interest that they look out for and put forward. These organisations are not clinical auditors, they are simply there to create profit for their sponsors. As they say, nothing is truly fair - there is no such thing as a level playing field. Generally the idea behind having an open and competitive market place is to yield better results and standards leading to more customer satisfaction, better profit and the seed corn for a future.

However, there is a trend from those with the loudest voices not to seek to grow an industry, but close it down. Instead of opening up to competition, there is an innate instinct to keep competition, the life blood of industry, at bay. This is achieved by looking for criteria that puts the established players ahead, and excludes new entrants, despite what some might say this is generally at the expense of the consumer.

At a recent gathering the question was posed as to why the Fenestration Industry lacks some of its former dynamism. The conclusion and simple answer is the lack of new blood, no fresh perspective, just the same ole, same ole people from year dot.

Competition in business pushes markets forward, however the manipulation of the competition to suit the established players and not the consumer, inhibits and rapidly causes an industry to decline. Bureaucracy, standards and red tape unless it is 100% directly focused on improving the life of every single consumer, however well meaning, is in fact an obstacle to the health of an industry.

Next time someone says they need to do something to 'help' or 'protect', who do they really mean?

Having read the letter in last week’s Fenestration News from Ken Evans at Securistyle, I would like to add my support to his comments regarding the launch of the TS007 security standard and recent statements by Steve Stewart at ABS Secure.

Ken is absolutely right to point out that, whilst Steve Stewart is technically correct in saying that cylinder snapping isn’t covered by BSI standards, he conveniently fails to mention that it is however covered in both PAS24: 2011 and in the newly launched TS007 standard for replacement cylinders and associated security hardware.
