The world is going down the drain in a hand cart

Read or listen to the Headlines put out by the mainstream media and quite reasonably you would get the impression the world is going down the drain in a hand cart. That is of course the danger of just ‘scanning’ which in itself is the consequence of information overload. Put simply it is now very rare that the headline and the story actually relate.

The reason for this mismatch? It’s called marketing, no marketing equals no sales; in this, the media is no different to any other industry. To get people interested in a story, you first have to catch their attention.

A sales motivational story I remember from a few years back. During the great depression of the 1920’s in the US, a guy, a roadside burger vendor, worked very long hours for a very small reward. He vowed to himself that his son wouldn’t be compelled to follow in his footsteps. So with that in mind he worked even harder to ensure he had the money to get his son the best education possible....[ more ]

More food for the brain

We have an item from MRA, ‘Integrated marketing at the cutting edge’. At a guess 50% of our industry gets it, of them no more than 10% have grasped how to implement it. The other 50% just don’t understand, comprehend or realise the opportunities that they are letting slip by, so in all it could be said that 95% have yet to realise their potential. A situation where the consumer is ahead of the market. The shame is, most of the marketing objectives alluded to can be achieved at a relatively small cost. ...[ more ]

Dear Ian

REHAU has long led the way in responding to the WERs initiative and in supporting both the legislative demands and the marketing opportunities presented by the changes to Part L. Not only were we the first PVC-U systems company to produce an A rated window back in March 2006, but we were also among the first to produce both WER and U-Value calculators to enable our customers to quickly work out the rating and performance for virtually any window combination and we will shortly be launching online versions to make that task even easier.

Whilst I very much support the use of calculators and believe that they are an essential tool to help fabricators and installers to understand the thermal performance and identify the potential benefits of their products, I am very concerned about the validity of some of the data which is being used to compile them....[ more ]

Dear Ian,

The Government’s Green Deal initiative will focus public awareness on energy efficiency in 2011 and 2012.

Our industry has done much to improve the performance of windows. But, it has virtually ignored the contribution a bi-folding door can make to heat loss or heat gain. An energy efficient bi-folding door is a major potential contributor to reducing carbon emissions, and to saving homeowners’ money.

Dear Ian

I’d like to thank the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF), Secured by Design (SBD), Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and BSI for listening to some of the concerns we raised about the TS007 Kitemark security standard for replacement cylinders and associated security furniture.

We’re pleased the testing method has been revised to make it more robust, and that locks and cylinders will now have to be tested on both PVC-U and timber doors.

I understand the need to launch a new Kitemark soon: Police and politicians need to show the public that they have listened to their concerns for security. ...[ more ]

Dear Ian,

Window Energy Ratings have been centre stage for a while now but security has continued to be one of the most important issues to homeowners and to the installers selling them their windows. On the flip side there has been very little attention given to offering a solution for easy escape in the event of a fire. Surely this should be as high on our agendas as security, if not even higher?

The consequences of a fire can be much more serious than that of a burglary because of course it can cause fatalities or serious injuries, and yet most of the window and door products sold and installed are done so on the basis of security over and above easy escape. Whether this is because the fear of crime is ‘sexier’ than fire safety, or because people focus on the frequency of the event more than the consequence of it, or perhaps because the police simply have a louder voice than the fire service, we don’t know. The question I would ask is whether the two issues have to be mutually exclusive? ...[ more ]
