Thoughts are turning to Christmas, not only is it a religious festival, it's about quality time with family and friends . It's a reflective time that shows us how lucky we all are, for no matter how tough it has been, there are always others that have had to endure more.

What most of us realise is, it is the person staring back at us in the mirror that defines and shapes our future - no one else.

We would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year

”It doesn't matter where you are.....”

"It doesn't matter where you are it just matters which way you are facing", another one of those anonymous sayings that if you think about it makes a lot of sense. However facing the right way is no help if you don't start walking! The past does not equal the future but this is the reality in many businesses and a business equipped to deal with the world as it used to be is likley to suffer the same fate as the dinasours. Walking in the business sense requires change and Managing Change is as much a part of business life as minding the shop (assuming you want to even survive let alone thrive).

Whether we like it or not the economic landscape we are now in is likley to be the world going forward. A long shallow slope is probably the shape of any recovery rather than the dramatic roller coaster of boom and bust we've seen in the past.. Whatever the shape of any macro economic revovery if you are waiting for a market solution to carry you forward I'd suggest you'll have a long wait. Many who have surfed the market waves in the past will now have to swim to get anywhere! (to mix another metaphor). Strategy is about making sure you are facing in the right direction (Leadership) but walking forward is about managing change....[ more ]

Have you survived four aircraft scares and an earthquake…….???

….well an applicant of ours has….. telling us they were “ a quick learner, resourceful, reliable, diplomatic and even tempered during tense situations, having survived four aircraft scares, an earthquake, being shot at and sitting on a crocodile”. This maybe so, but would this candidate stand out from the crowd when screening for a field sales role within the trade sector of the window industry? An employer could possibly view this as a strength of character when hunting for new business and the CV certainly stands out but in the right way? (my initial reaction was “Oh my goodness, what an unfortunate person”).

As a recruitment specialist in the building products industry we read/screen hundreds of CV’s every week, ranging from short sharp editions to lengthy manuscripts, some with a disciplined format and some with a sense of humour. Each format is indicative of that person’s character, but the key criteria when physically screening (and not using an automated search engine may we add) is extracting the specific key skills against the brief...[ more ]
