Basically a worker was on site alone and got into an unsupported trench that had just been dug; the walls then collapsed killing the guy by suffocation. His company’s health & safety rule book explicitly forbids any one in the company from carrying out this type of operation i.e. getting into an unsupported trench. Never the less the Company and its Directors were found guilty. Sentencing is next week. This is akin to a window installer on his own falling off a ladder that is without stabilisers or similar restraints. Going by the judgement it appears it doesn’t matter what your rule book says, it is what happens in practice and the consequences that are judged. What are exhibitions for? Should you go… What are exhibitions for? I suppose in a way the clue is in the title, an opportunity to exhibit. Why would you want to exhibit anything? This is where the Fenestration Industry in recent times has corrupted the proposition. The main industry national exhibitions deteriorated into being places to pose, prance, adopt the stance of I am bigger than you, look at me, going on to become just expensive networking events. This was alright when it was not about the expectation of doing business but more about beating ones chest – look how great we are, as the objective. It was about going for the wind-up with your competitors, networking with your competitors, as they are the only ones milling around the hall. Even the exhibition organisers got into similar habits, as one told me we don’t need to promote a show, or even let the trade media know what is happening, it is the trade media that needs them. The reasoning being that without their exhibition the trade media couldn’t do the ‘special’ and create the extra motivation to gain extra revenue streams for their own advertisers. As for the exhibitors it was up to them to promote the show, it was up to them to get prospective customers to come and see them. ...[ more ] In Box Letter to the Editor - Steve Stewart, Managing Director of ABS Secure Dear Ian Currently a revised security standard for retrofit cylinder replacements is being rushed through by the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF), BSI and Secured by Design (SBD) in response to a burglary pandemic that started in West Yorkshire and is spreading to other parts of the UK. Rushed legislation is usually flawed legislation. Regulations that are introduced in panic, without time for adequate consultation and reflection, invariably have long term unintended consequences. In this case the consequences are almost certainly going to be a loss of public trust and damage to the industry’s reputation. The problem is centred on the vulnerability of euro cylinders to snapping which enables an intruder to remove the cylinder and walk in. The cylinders are used in most PVC-U doors, and a burglar who knows how can break in without difficulty in one minute. West Yorkshire’s Chief of Police warned the public about the problem in November 2009. ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Steve Stewart, Managing Director, Avocet Hardware ABS Division In Box Letter to the Editor - from Prefix Systems Dear Ian, Over recent weeks I’ve read several press releases from various market research companies looking at the plight of the glazing industry and also the fall of the conservatory market. But let’s make this clear it is certainly no demise! The market has clearly changed. During the peak of the conservatory market, volume was built on the sales of standard white Victorian, Georgian and lean-to conservatories. Specifications are now increasing with more colours such as our own range of 9 colours and woodgrains, the integration of bi-folding doors and high specification roof glass which is now considered the norm in new installations.....[ more ] Regards Chris Baron & Chris Cooke, Prefix Systems(UK) Ltd In Box Letter to the editor from Howard Hirst (Sales Director, Liniar) Dear Ian, Michael Ankers, Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association (CPA), says construction is in dire straights. In the latest CPA report he states: “The recovery in the construction industry has already petered out and private sector growth is not coming through strongly enough.” The overall construction market and most markets within it are going through torrid times. The Window industry is no exception. But everyone has a choice. You can wait for the market to improve and sales to come to you or you can make your own luck and seek growth wherever it is.....[ more ] Yours sincerely Howard Hirst, Sales Director, Liniar Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com Senior Architectural Systems- advertisement
