Defining the customer, for profit

Growth, growth and more growth, a simple mantra for success that when it also encompasses profit, profit and more profit, it causes some organisations to stand head and shoulders above their counterparts.

Historically in the Fenestration Industry company growth has been achieved by pulling more and more customers into the fold. Today a new reasoning is coming into play, the customer, or more correctly defining 'who' is the real customer?

To the systems company the customer at one level is the fabricating companies. From that a logic, to gain more business all they need to do is bring more fabricators into the fold. There lies the dilemma, a combination of bureaucracy, red tape, standards and conformity while all well meaning in their own right have conspired to polarise and stagnate the market. Seemingly now, as defined by the legislators, all systems perform the same, and as such they are now also seen to be the same by the majority of the end users.

With the same thinking in mind, what would cause a fabricator to jump ship and go to the extreme expense of using an alternative supplier? In today's market everything is pointing to price, to that end it means a cheaper price, as the natural motivator. ...[ more ]
