NWL brings old style charm with its New England lead Jobs, and even more jobs this week Remember, for all the latest news updated daily, check out the Fenestration News website @ www.fenestration-news.com The altruism and the lengths the people of the Fenestration Industry go to help others never ceases to amaze. Gavin Paskin, National Sales Manager of Specialised Conservatory Systems sets his sights on a quick time in the London Marathon for Multiple Sclerosis. Meanwhile Scott Mulligan, of Wrightstyle, finished the annual Antarctic Ice Marathon in 9th place in support of the British Red Cross. Please give generously to these guys; it is your cash for their charities that is the applause they seek. Working with one hand tied behind your back.. “Shooting one’s self in the foot”,” working with one hand tied behind your back” or even “being stabbed in the back” are just some of the well worn phrases that come to mind at this time of the year. Yes, once again the Fenestration Industry is seemingly being screwed by those that operate the supply chain. How, why, who? It starts with those companies that are not too well managed; they neither have the order book in front of them or the cash behind them to get over the hump that is caused every year by the Christmas break. So you get, no cash, just walk away and start again. So what is the problem with that? Well they never are really starting afresh, they use similar names, infer an untruth to those on the previous company’s customer base and so on, i.e. they want and need the benefits of the failed outfit but none of its obligations. It is not the evolution it should be for a cohesive dynamic industry. A dynamic industry is one that is open and easy for new start-ups to challenge the establishment, that way it keeps everything fresh, alive and vibrant. However, offering life support to the terminally corrupt does no more than sap the energy and life blood from the healthy. What has it to do with the supply chain? The Industry Suppliers most of the time insure their debts, so some think it is the insurance industry that pays. But who is it that pays the insurance premiums? The customer of course. Not the customer that went under, but the ones that run the tight ship, meets their obligations and set out to ensure the future of the industry they love. However, it goes further than that. The Industry Suppliers then “kick sand” (you choose the metaphor) in the face of their customers by taking on the supply of the now debt free similar named company, the reasoning being if they don’t someone else will. Conveniently forgetting that all their (Supply Chain Company) losses are picked up by the hardworking well managed companies they have as customers. In turn these customers have to face a ‘new old’ competitor in the market place that is free of all debt and obligations. Customer loyalty? We call this ‘Phoenixing’, also referred to as a ‘pre-pack arrangement’. It is not an instrument of a free market, it is not about improving the market pace, it is about levelling it down. It could even been seen as the honest having to subsidise the corrupt. You can tell a lot about your suppliers not just by the superficial side of the trade, order placed, order supplied, order paid for, but how they act to undermine you in the market place. In Box Letter to the editor from Martin Randall Dear Ian. Last year we heard about Government cuts and austerity. This year we will feel them. Consumers are worried about their finances. Many will cut back on spending and retail sales are forecast to fall by £2.2bn. So 2011 will be a far more difficult year for window companies. At times like this fabricator-installers will want to concentrate on what they do best to sell most effectively and improve their profitability. This means selling the widest range of products to meet consumers’ needs. But can they focus their full attention on doing that if they are fabricating and installing? ...[ more ] Yours sincerely
