The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 14,000 recipients in just over 9,000 organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across. From the News: - Innovative as always, Pilkington chose the London Eye as another of their inspired locations to launch their latest product - 'K Glass S'. From that lofty position the history of glazing was laid out in front of us, as the industries media editors were given a full 3600 vista of the evolution of glazing through the ages. From the historic to the modern we had a panorama demonstrating the evolution of glazing in front of us. Pilkington K Glass S is their next step in the drive to ever lower U values. Certass Thermal Rating Register, updates with Pilkington K Glass S DGCOS and BM TRADA stage seminar on Green Deal. BM TRADA selected for Green Deal pilot BFRC & Door-Stop announce installation of UK’s first energy rated door. KAT UK Achieve UK’s Highest ‘A’ Rated Sash Windows REHAU has updated its online thermal calculator to allow users to obtain U-Value calculations and indicative WER ratings for its new 0.8W/m2K window. Energy costs This week has seen a lot of noise on how the costs of energy for the consumer are mounting. The Government seemingly as usual looks towards the next election, so its instincts are to be populist and, perversely to that end, seeks to tell private industry that good profits are bad. Energy is one of those finite resources that is now being shared by a wider and ever growing world population. However, Governments, in their confusion of making out they have a purpose, tend to make promises to the electorate that always have cost implications to others. They also tend to set up bureaucratic nig.htmllares that disproportionally add to costs, more importantly these costs tend to come without any real benefits to the consumer. The only conclusion you can come to is that for Governments, it is about the next election, them staying employed and their own egos that they find important. Government rulings have given us free energy saving light bulbs, also free or subsidised home insulation for most consumers. The cost of these freebies doesn't come from government ministers, companies, corporations or some mysterious source, it comes solely from the consumers paying the bills to these organisations. One man's freebie is another's cost. As if to cloud the issue further Government, along with their voice Ofgen, make a big play on the idea that now with average energy bills at £1345 the supplier company profit margins have risen on average to £125 per user. ( Although the power companies contest this, they don't see how a net margin of 4% is £125). The pitched 'sound-bite' has this profit as somehow being obscene, that the energy companies are the bad boys. Is that so Government can be seen to be good guys? What Government has failed to mention is that their newly introduced energy taxes are said to add up to £136 on the same bill, then of course there is the VAT they take on the whole lot. i.e. The Government take on energy bills is the bigger proportion than anybody else's for doing the least. One part of everyone's heating and lighting bill is about investing to secure an energy future, the other is to punish the consumer for using the resource. To the Fenestration Industry, all this high profile bickering is raising awareness of the cost of energy and as such is creating a marketing opportunity, anything capable of reducing costs must be good! As we all know, modern windows and doors are extremely draught-proof. Escaping heat due to draughts is one of the largest contributors to runaway energy bills. We all know that.... but does the public? If we aren't telling them, how will they find out? In Box Letter to the Editor - Is your Supplier Stable? - Bruce Morley, Tradelink's Dear Ian Is your Supplier Stable? It’s difficult to deny that the market is tough right now – in fact if we’re honest it’s a bit of a blood bath out there with everyone seemingly seeing how low they can go with their prices. Meanwhile the cost of raw materials continues to climb. It’s no surprise then that the majority of trade frame fabricators are feeling the pinch. Companies of all sizes are closing their doors or giving up on fabrication. Others are hanging in there but if you look at their financials are almost running on fumes. It’s almost impossible for installers to second guess whether their supplier is safe. But they need to. ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Bruce Morley, Business Development Director In Box Letter to the Editor - The Triple Glazing Debate Continues - Alan Fielder, Edgetech Dear Ian The Triple Glazing Debate Continues The debate about triple glazing continues, but not just in the window industry. Self build and home renovation experts as well as the heating industry are all discussing its merits. And the jury is still out. The general consensus seems to be that the UK climates don’t really warrant triple glazing and the complications it brings – i.e. greater expense and a heavier window. But whatever complications triple glazing brings and whether or not it makes a marked difference to fuel bill costs, it does make a building more comfortable to be in. According to a physics study carried out by the PassivHaus Institute in Germany, triple glazing allows the internal temperature to stay closer to the desired 21°C at 18°C than double glazing at 16°C. And as fuel costs continue to rise, ...[ more ] Yours sincerely Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edgetech, a Quanex Company In Box Letter to the Editor - ‘A’ energy rating - Nick Dutton Dear Ian, Congratulations to component supplier Distinction on getting an ‘A’ energy rating simulation. Even though this is not as yet certified (probably because Distinction don’t supply doors) it is great to see that other door companies are now following Door-Stop down the DER path.
