90% of the industry would rather let business pass them by

Just as with most organisations that use the internet to communicate with its audience we generally like to get a feel as to the where, what and why’s of visitor trends. What is becoming clear is that website use is becoming similar to software use; in that no one is using as much as 10% of the facilities on offer. From that it could be reasoned 90% of the creative effort is wasted, but that train of thought is misplaced, as no one is using the same 10%.

Looking at the Internet and its relationship with the Fenestration Industry a similar pattern emerges. On the one hand the use of the Internet to communicate by email or place orders is seen as the norm. Yet when it comes to using the web to promote their own business, the impression is that to 90% of the industry the internet doesn’t exist.

The irony, or is it contradiction, the 90% of the Industry without a web presence, when they themselves need contact information they no longer reach for the always out of date Yellow Pages (other directories are available) but go straight to the keyboard. However, when it comes to their own company they spend a fortune on getting in similar directories, yet expend nothing on having a web presence. The assumption being made is that they are alone in using the internet to search for items of interest - surely everyone else still uses the printed directories?....[ more ]

Dear Ian,

Why is it that I frequently find myself having to defend our industry against ill informed conjecture and opinion? I’m sure you know the feeling at a social gathering when you are asked what you do for a living. You reply that you are in the window industry and, rather than feeling proud of being part of a £3.5Bn industry and being able to speak about new and innovative products that increase security and thermal performance as well as reducing fuel bills, you are forced on the defensive because you are associated with the outdated image of the pushy retail salesman who won’t leave the house until he has a signed order!

Well, sometimes we deserve that reputation. Much has been written recently about the DGCOS having to refute allegations made via an anonymous campaign that called into question its very structure. At Roseview Windows, we have experienced a similar smear campaign....[ more ]
