Squeezing the consumer out of the market?

The last 12 months without doubt have seen a decline in the active participants in the Fenestration Industry, for some after many years it was time to retire, for others they just needed a new direction to keep the spark alive, then of course we get those that well - just 'screw-up'.

Over the years the Fenestration Industry has been as diverse as the variety of consumers for the products. It is this difference that causes the dynamism and growth in the industry.

With that in mind, we get surprised time and time again by the comments of those our instincts suggest should know better. The thought seems to be that if every company has the same standard product, at the same price then the market will grow. What is missing from these theories is the customer, and what a company can offer them.

What people do not ask is what does this do for the customer. As an over simplification, we have known for years that installing even the most basic modern double glazed windows & doors will save around 18-25% of the heat loss from a typical home. Of that the majority, the greatest majority, of the heat loss saving is achieved by the installation of draught proof products i.e. It is the draught proofing that saves the majority of the heat loss. Yet the recent push for conformity has seen an ever increasing reliance on the micro measuring to demonstrate some sort of performance gain, most of which never play out in real world applications. The problem being of course there is only so far the existing technologies can take us, a fact of life for the moment, at least until someone comes up with a better idea....[ more ]
