How's your Internet based activity?

In 2010 a survey show there are now 51,442,100, or 82.5%, of the population classified as broadband users in the UK. At the same time BT predicts by 2013 90% of UK homes will be wired for high speed fibre optic broadband.

From that it is possible to draw the conclusion that, not only are the greater majority of potential customers on the internet, this would also be the place they do their research before any purchase.

So how come so few Fenestration Industry companies even bother with using the internet to the full? They use it personally, they use it in business every day, but ignore the marketing perspective. It is quite normal to find what is assumed to be a well organised company with a reasonable local profile, that just cannot be found with an internet search - the reason being they just don't have a presence. So to the consumer, even if they had heard of them, what conclusion would they come to?...[ more ]

Half life of Social Networking

While on the subject of the Internet an interesting survey just out by Bit.ly shows the effect of Social media in communicating a linked message, the' half life' of a message on Twitter is 2.8 hours, on Facebook its 3.2 hours and on YouTube it tops out 7.4 hours.

BFRC Staement - Companies registering on the new Door Energy Rating scheme

BFRC Ltd, the main regulator of energy efficient doors and windows in the UK, understands querying the speed of Door-Stop’s registration on the new Doors Energy Ratings (DER) Scheme. There has also been some confusion over terminology used in recent announcements. BFRC would like to clear up any misunderstandings.

Door-Stop has announced it is the first door manufacturer to register on the DER Scheme. BFRC fully support Door-Stop’s achievement and statement, and approved the press release.

During registration there are a series of processes to be completed before licences can be issued. Door-Stop and other manufacturers are working their way through these and BFRC expects the first DER licence will be issued imminently.

Door-Stop contacted BFRC by email at the end of August after reading an early article about the launch of DERs in the glazing trade media. ...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - reply to ABS Secure

Dear Ian,

I felt compelled to reply to a recent comment from ABS Secure stating that lock snapping isn’t covered by BSI standards, which I felt was slightly disingenuous. In his letter Mr Stewart seems to suggest that nothing is being done about this issue by organisations that set security standards. This is misleading because this emergent criminal technique has been taken account of in the revised PAS24 standard - the enhanced security performance requirements for door assemblies, was up-issued to combat this very problem, and is now PAS24:2011. In addition to this the industry has been collaborating for some time to come up with a solution for existing doors that can be clearly understood by the general public....[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - in response to Door Stops press release claiming to have the UK’s first ever energy

Dear Ian,

Rockdoor announce the 1st AAA+ rated door.

Rockdoor is pleased to announce the industry’s 1st AAA+ energy rated door……. well not really, but it’s a good headline.

When the BFRC officially decide/announce the testing criteria in October we’ll be working hard to provide our customer’s one of the first legitimate energy rated doors available.

In order for any Composite Door manufacturer to ‘promote’ an energy rated door we must first of all await the publication...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Door Energy Ratings

Dear Ian,

It was with much surprise that I read news in industry publications this week of certain companies expressing their pride at becoming among the first to register on the BFRC’s Door Energy Ratings (DER) scheme. This has rattled many industry players, but any ruffled feathers are not borne out of envy. Rather, they stem from the fact that the announcement is simply too premature; these companies are implying that they have achieved the as-yet unachievable.

At the time of writing, the BFRC hasn’t actually issued all the calculation methods for DERs. Once the BFRC’s simulation group, on which Spectus sits, has confirmed the DER calculation methods and formulae, these will be distributed to all certified simulators. There will then be a two week period before any DER certificates will be issued. ...[ more ]

Yours sincerely,

Martin Althorpe,
Technical Director, Spectus Window Systems

Letter to the Editor - from Roger Benton, Joint Managing Director of HOPPE (UK)

Dear Ian,

It’s always interesting when new legislation and standards are introduced into our industry, especially when they relate to such an important and emotive issue as security. Recent debates have naturally been focussed around the new changes to the PAS24 standard which were approved in August. While we have a period of up to 12 months grace depending on when a company’s PAS24 audit is next due, there is confusion in the market place about the implications of these new standards.

Part of the harmonisation of European standards, includes the removal of BS7950 and PAS23 to be replaced with the new benchmark standard BSEN1627:2011. A national foreword for this has been introduced which will allow compliance with PAS 24 or EN 1627-30. This is soon to be ratified by CEN....[ more ]

Yours sincerely

Roger Benton, Joint Managing Director - HOPPE (UK)
