From the News.

Cost or benefit?

You now have a new government, a new regime in control of your lives and with that comes more new promises. Just as with the previous election 5 years ago the big promise for business from the Conservatives was, elect us and we will reduce red tape for business. To ensure you don't forget, they have just reiterated that promise through the new Business Secretary Sajid Javid.

According to surveys and reports, the last Government (who were they again?) while promising to cut red-tap over the last 5 years they actually increased it 5 fold. So is it cynical to take with a pinch of salt anything that emanates from the mouths of the political class?

While we are on the theme of bureaucracy, our Glass Industry’s trade body 'Glass for Europe' want everyone to sign up to the new EU energy label for windows.

" " - advertisement

Again the cynic in me questions the purpose. Would an EU energy label for windows be the equivalent in meaning to the consumer as the EU fuel consumption scheme? Just as with our own little internal BFRC label none of these schemes translates into a meaningful gauge of performance that the consumer can expect in their own set of circumstances.

I can understand the warm and cuddly well-meaning, hand holding approach these initiatives start out with. However, once the consumer is enforced to pay for something they don't actually get a direct benefit from - it does call into question the real motives from the law makers, their adviser and the vested interested bodies who profit from these initiatives.

I am all for testing and standards, but unless the claims these make are an actual guarantee to the consumer of the benefit they will receive for their expenditure - it has to be reasonable to suggest they are nothing more than unnecessary costs, there to hinder free and fair trade between competing entities.
