Defeat mechanisms

You could say - it’s one of those weeks. There are many interpretations for the headlines in the main stream media and many would suggest that it doesn’t affect me or my business so does not interest me. That misses the essence of human nature and the ‘butterfly effect’.

The angle I am taking here is the exposure of VW Group’s propensity to manipulate the rules for profit. It could be reasoned it was the next step for sloppy management that were unable to evolve their products and offerings to develop their customer base, instead the philosophy is to take out the competition. As with all mergers, take-overs and groupings they rarely achieve any long term objective or growth by customer appeal, they are instead playing out the natural human instinct of protecting what one has by removing the challenges.

The consequence of this short term thinking is to reduce consumer choice, which then affects demand. The next step, as the perceived vulnerabilities are still there, is to bend and have rules that meet their terms, constructed to the detriment of the competition.

Where it seemingly gets complicated and also takes us away from how this manipulation affects the Fenestration Industry is at first not obvious. The VW Group problem here and in Europe is different to that in the US.

On this side of the pond their manipulation of the meaning of the rules has been known by the political class for some years, it fitted their agenda so was ignored and as such wasn’t against any laws. In the US, following on from a similar situation with US truck manufacturers, the VW Group is said to have signed the paperwork to say they wouldn’t do it (bend the rules) with the authorities (the EPA). So the VW manipulation in that situation could be seen as straightforward deliberate, dishonest move and was breaking the laws....[more]
