This weeks observations

Book early for Christmas

That perennial phrase to devalue an event has turned up once more on notice boards outside establishments up and down the country.

That’s marketing…?

This winter will be one of the coldest, hardest ones we have seen in 50 years according to the pundits. The reason for that conclusion is that a handful of Bewick's swans have turned up on the Somerset levels a couple of weeks early. The prevailing wind… had nothing to do with it!

Who is selling what…?

For years companies in all walks of life would suggest that if the consumer was to buy now, today, they would save a 1/3rd or save 33%. Seemingly the idea was that a saving would cause a purchase.

That’s marketing… Or is it?

" " - advertisement

There is a slight hiccup here to a certain extent (when we are talking bespoke), 33% of what, when you don’t know the price beforehand. So that’s when the ‘turning on its head a bit’ came about. If you buy 2 we will give you one free.

The consumer still equated it as saving a 1/3rd or 33%, but now it was expressed as something tangible. Then at the other end the astute bean counter got it. In window sales terms that top discount is actually very, very rare. Are you following that…. A massive discount that isn’t. The real mechanics of the proposal, 3 windows the same size, then how the guys (sales & installers) in the chain get paid and so on, this background nitty gritty goes a long way to ensure the viability of such an offer and in practical terms the real discount is closer to 20%.

Highlighting how marketing should never be seen as the price per se - but the way of attracting the interest. The interest created for the prospective customer is, if I talk to these guys I could save money....[more]

Letter to the Editor - Part Q: Do all doors make the cut?

Dear Ian

Amends to Approved Document Q are now in force and it has been interesting to see how the industry has responded in the run up to October 1st. This past week in particular has provided a flurry of activity from hardware manufacturers, testing and certification companies, industry bodies and of course, composite door suppliers. We have all seen Solidor’s video which demonstrates its door passing the more demanding PAS 24 cut tests, but what we have also seen is a lack of commotion concerning the role played by the door glass [...more ].

Letter to the editor - the implications of Doc Q and the new PAS24-

Dear Ian

Approved Document Q and Secured by Design, and more specifically the new PAS24 test, require mass market foam composite doors to up spec their GRP skins and glass because, as currently specified, at least 7 in 10 doors don’t pass.

This won’t just be for rare occasions. Increasingly PAS24 and Secured by Design will be expected by most of the market. We believe that Social housing providers shouldn't be fobbed off with under-specced, insecure doors. Many are already insisting on the new standard. It will be promoted on national TV campaigns by local and national retailers. Solidor is already promoting it. Our video is educating homeowners so they understand the problems with mass market composite doors, and what good doors do. It’s a powerful video (http://www.solidor.co.uk/solidor-tv), so we expect it to go viral very quickly[...more ]
