Observations

Playing catch-up already

2016, from all of us here we wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

2015 was a great year for most in the Fenestration Industry and an exceptional year for many. At the Fenestration News we published some 1338 exciting releases on behalf of 1062 companies. This includes 94 Product announcements, 52 shiny new Projects, 72 Events promotional announcements and 27 website launches or updates. As a consequence the Fenestration News items were viewed some 1,980,000 *.

Historically, come the winter solstice and then a New Year, there is a sense of renewal, a new beginning with a big push to hit the ground running. However, a canny few have realised that if you do what others do, get on the same stage as them, you become part of the cast, just part of the ensemble. That can be entertaining for the viewer, then and only then if they (the viewer) has the time to spare.

What happened to the January Sale ? It’s no longer needed, as having an offer or a bargain at the same time as the showcase set piece from others, is just background, part of the clutter. So was born the early promotion, get in before Christmas, stand out and grab the customer before the competition.

Even this get-in-early approach no longer reaches the potential of just a year or so ago. Those that play follow the leader are also there, so again the stage gets crowded when it comes to the share out.

Technology has allowed the buyer to take a different approach. Their time is precious it’s a resource they use wisely, that’s how they make money. An aspiration or need from the consumer is no longer followed up in the traditional way of finding the time to go out and look for it. Why should they, when it is all there on a screen in front of them. Life is more spontaneous, want it now, do it now and move on to the next. More productive, more efficient.

To add to the analogy here, the big Supermarkets have seen how shopping trends have changed, no longer is there the customer with the big monthly shop. The consumer grabs on the go and as a consequence their loyalty has also changed. They head to where they can fulfill the need, ring the changes, as it improves their life style.

What about industry? More importantly the Fenestration Industry. Is marketing as part of the crowd as effective as it once was? Or is being different, mapping your own agenda, tapping into how your market now works more fulfilling and rewarding. Sitting here on this sometimes lofty perch you get to see not just the headline improvers, but the actual winners.

*a corrupt log file in March 2015, means this figure is not the full year.

Letter to editor, RISA - Alan Fielder Edgetech

Dear Ian,

The recent announcement that the GGF has created RISA (Rushworth Inspection Services & Auditing) Ltd, a subsidiary to take over from FENSA’s inspections to audit installations within the replacement glazing sectors, has to be good news for the glazing industry. We welcome any move to raise the industry standards for the installation of windows and doors.

For many years we’ve been at the forefront of raising performance and standards. As the leading voice for energy efficient glazing we have seen the industry manufacture higher specification products than anyone thought possible ten years ago. It’s not just been in thermal efficiency. Security too has seen big improvements. ..[ more ]

Yours sincerely,

Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing
