Observations

Another new week and another raft of product announcements, more confirmation of growth and a general good feeling for those that 'never stop'.

The continued promotional activity by all involved in the Composite Door market is creating momentum, these doors are now becoming the default option for those looking to improve. They generally look the part and most importantly 'do what they say on the tin'. As we all know composite doors are not new, they have actually been on the market longer than most of the people buying them have been around. It's the fact they are being marketed that is causing awareness.

In modern times UAP highlighted a perennial industry flaw, this has now been taken up by Brisant Secure with the Ultion lock and Yale with the Platinum 3 Star – this being the bump lock problem. For more than 50 years the industry has knowingly been providing easy access to people's property, by providing locks not fit for purpose. It does sort of beg the question 'who are the criminals'. Logically it is this revived marketing against this complacency that might at long last move us beyond the problem.

Pilkington have this week published a report that asks the supply chain to engage and do more to secure the future of the industry. Innovation from R&D is seen as the way forward with those involved also beating the drum on how and why they are part of the solution. Unless the audience gets to hear, any noise in the backroom will be the same as the tree falling in a deserted wood.

As an ancient observer, some things (not many) have changed in the market place. The most significant of which is the expectations from the consumer that things do what they say. Claims made by product and services relate directly to how they the consumer would use them.

Synthetic testing that doesn't yield real world comparison and results are classed by the consumer as money down the drain.

We all know well insulated window frames work. We all know that a thermal break/warm edge IGU works. What seems to pass some by is do they work together? I personally believe that the typical cross sectional illustration given of the 2 together unintentionally misinforms and, as such, confuses some into making false promises. That said a significant portion at the front end are aware of this innuendo and the sales story doesn't get told.

Thermal break/warm edge IGU’s promote the theory of isolating the outer pane cold air from the inner pane (warm side). In the greater majority of frames made available in the UK this can never happen – both panes sit in the same cold outside air. We all know this, so we seek to ignore it, does that mean we intentionally deceive the consumer?

A noticeable exception to this is the construct of Apeer's Lumi window, it does what we would expect of window technology.

As a sort of answer to Pilkington's call, if thoughts turn to the consumer first, and how to meet their expectations, you naturally arrive at the right question, quest and direction. Then you have something to shout about. As many people have said and will keep saying it is the consumer that pays all our bills.

Glass and glazing supply chain must do more to support future growth of the sector

• Industry must do more to promote long-term benefits of high-performance products
• Developers' focus on low-cost rather than quality cited as area of concern
• Standard frame size is holding back widespread adoption of triple-glazing

Fabricators, installers and manufacturers across the glass and glazing supply chain must do more to promote the benefits of high-performance products to homeowners if they are to secure the future growth of the industry, according to a new report published by Pilkington United Kingdom Limited.

With a significant amount of R&D taking place across the domestic glazing sector, a number of innovative products are coming to market. Despite this, key industry figures believe more needs to be done to promote products with properties such as advanced energy performance to consumers.

Speaking in 'Framing the debate: What does the future hold for the domestic glazing market?', Mark Catchpole, sales director at SWC Trade Frames, said: “Product development and innovation is happening rapidly, and the energy performance that windows can deliver is getting better and better...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - Response to Mark Barsby letter

Dear Ian,

Mark Barsby VEKA UK refers to my 'Pretty Windows' article in a recent letter saying “Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beauty should not be the only method.” He also dismisses 90mm+ systems with many chambers saying: “they are consuming approximately 30% more raw materials without equivalent improvements in performance.”

Deceuninck don't sell a 90mm window system in the UK, and I'm not defending any particular system depth, but doesn't VEKA sell a 90mm (and an 82mm) window system in Germany? And for now at least, aren't we still one Europe?

Regardless of frame depth, British specifiers and homeowners like slimmer, prettier systems designed to suit our architecture and character. ..[ more ]

Roy Frost, Managing Director

Letter to the Editor - The new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Dear Ian,

The new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Some said it would never get here. It would be kicked into the long grass, or watered down so it wouldn't affect them. Sit tight and do nothing, they said. Wait until we let you know.

If you listened to that advice, you'll be 6 months behind your competitors who acted.

They've been selling doors that pass the new PAS24:2016 test. They can continue selling to New Build, conversions where Building Regulations apply, and Social Housing where housing specifiers are already insisting on it...[ more ]
