Observations

The Budget

It's that time of the year when there is a moment of pause as the figures come in, yes the national debt has ballooned to almost £1.6trillion under this Chancellor - about £24,000 for every man, woman and child in the country.

Government borrowing from April 2015 to January 2016 hit an eye-watering £66.5billion - despite more than two years of relatively strong economic growth and nearly six years of brutal cuts.

The economy is now expected to drop by close on 17% from previous predictions in November 2015 (4 months ago). As individuals you get to keep a bit more of your earnings sometime after the next Budget. Likewise business taxes are expected to drop sometime in the future.

To be on message, sometime in the future, we will have a tax on sugar rather than just banning its excessive use. Tate & Lyle are actually quite sanguine about that, while stock market traders lost money – they (T&L) got out of the sugar market some time back. In reality this is what it is, publicity seeking, a 20% sugar tax on sugary drinks had already been put in place a few years back and it hasn’t made any difference to sales or consumption.

" " - advertisement

If you are the type that takes responsibility for themselves by ensuring you have adequate insurance protection – the tax on this has risen again. Those that look for handouts from the taxpayer when things go wrong, they are in luck – it has become the even cheaper alternative.

It will eventually be cheaper to get into Wales and as always it still remains free to get out. However the £3million a week in fines for using the Dartford crossing remain.

Following the Chancellor's statement, as is tradition there are numerous observations that he didn't go far enough. Also as is tradition there are those that cry out ‘give me more of the tax-payer’s earnings '

Why is it someone always wants to be given something from that which the dwindling number of earners are creating, while not being interested at looking in the mirror first?

The reality is that until the 'Red Book' has been analyzed, dissected and absorbed no one knows what The Chancellor’s pronouncements mean. Then again there is another budget before any action from this one will take place.

How does the Budget affect the fenestration industry? The comments above may seem a bit tongue in cheek, but in reality that is the extent of the Budget in a nut shell – nothing much happening today, or even tomorrow, but sometime eventually.

Glass and glazing supply chain must do more to support future growth of the sector

• Industry must do more to promote long-term benefits of high-performance products
• Developers' focus on low-cost rather than quality cited as area of concern
• Standard frame size is holding back widespread adoption of triple-glazing

Fabricators, installers and manufacturers across the glass and glazing supply chain must do more to promote the benefits of high-performance products to homeowners if they are to secure the future growth of the industry, according to a new report published by Pilkington United Kingdom Limited.

With a significant amount of R&D taking place across the domestic glazing sector, a number of innovative products are coming to market. Despite this, key industry figures believe more needs to be done to promote products with properties such as advanced energy performance to consumers.

Speaking in 'Framing the debate: What does the future hold for the domestic glazing market?', Mark Catchpole, sales director at SWC Trade Frames, said: “Product development and innovation is happening rapidly, and the energy performance that windows can deliver is getting better and better...[ more ]

Letter to the Editor - The new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Dear Ian,

The new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Some said it would never get here. It would be kicked into the long grass, or watered down so it wouldn't affect them. Sit tight and do nothing, they said. Wait until we let you know.

If you listened to that advice, you'll be 6 months behind your competitors who acted.

They've been selling doors that pass the new PAS24:2016 test. They can continue selling to New Build, conversions where Building Regulations apply, and Social Housing where housing specifiers are already insisting on it...[ more ]

Sincerely

Gareth Mobley CEO, Solidor
