The Fenestration News Bulletin this week will be sent to more than 14,000 recipients in just over 9,000  organisations aligned to the Window Industry. Making it an effective delivery platform to get your Companies message across.

Observations

Ready, Get Set, Go!

Of course it depends how your organisation takes account of its-self. It's either 2016 and 25%; of the year has already passed or, if the worry is tax, then the year has this week just kicked off. For those that tax is the primary concern they see April as launch of a new marketing year and strategy. That latter notion seems to come about as the UK along with our EU counter-parts have a high tax burden that is somewhere north of 40% of everything we earn. In other words for the first 150 days, getting on for half a year, you are all working to keep the State happy.

That seemingly random digression goes someway to try to understand what causes events. When is the right time, the right showcase, do you follow others, try to be part of the hype? All of that is right and wrong at the same time. After all business is a race, there are winners and losers.

The big noises in the fenestration industry are generally made by those in the supply chain. Where do they get their timing from? Is it internal policy, defined by a tax-year, budgets or is there an outside chance its customer lead? Then the point is, who do you see as the customer? Is it the next part of the chain or is it everybody's real customer, the consumer.

" " - advertisement

It's not that great new ideas don't sell, it's just that hitting the market at the wrong part of the cycle means time has been created for the competition to catch up just as the customers are ready to buy. As such the full potential of effort gets diluted.

Traditionally the fenestration industry consumer comes to the market place when they have got over Christmas, paid the bills and before they make the big commitment to this years ' Hols'. They then return to the market in numbers when their summer break is behind them. There is something magical about having a window or conservatory installation when it’s cold, wet and the days are at their shortest.

Stating the obvious, time and time again we see those organisations that create their own agenda, place themselves in step with 'the'customer, always finish up further ahead than the rest of the 'wagon train'. The question is, who does your organisation plan its strategy for?

Big Data – So what I want to make more Money!

Most of us are aware of the term big data being used these days, mostly in relation to companies like Google or Amazon. The most common definition is simply ways of analysing massive amounts of information to gain some useful insight into what is currently happening and offer foresight of what might happen in the future.

A recent Gartner Survey(1) showed that over 75% of companies are investing or planning to invest in big data over the next 2 years.

What you may not realise is that your company probably holds years of order, quote and product information. Although this probably doesn't fall under the realms of 'Big Data' you may well encounter the same issues that need to be considered before these companies invest in big data- If I start with the last and perhaps most important question because if there is no benefit to be had then it's best to know from the outset before you start investing time & money!

Most of you will probably agree on many of these goals such as cost reduction, better targeting of customers & increased efficiency of existing processes. How much time is currently spent by your employees populating and collating data into spreadsheets and creating graphs!

MIT Sloan Management Review carried out a survey in 2012(2) which showed that 67'of participants reported that their companies are gaining a competitive edge through the use of analytics, as we look a little deeper into how we can use the data you'll see why.

If we take a simple example by looking at order information, your manufacturing software will most likely have detailed information of every order each of your customers have placed. Logically, if we know what every customer has ordered just over the last year then we also know what products the customer hasn't ordered;..[ more ]
