Observations

Identifying winners

This week's round up of Fenestration Industry activity gives the appearance that companies are taking their customers seriously and starting to offer the products they the consumer always thought they would be getting.

The focus here is of the door, it's the first impression offered of what a home will be like when a visitor steps inside. It is also a reflection of the person behind the door, so to them the aesthetics are a high tick on the list along with how will it cope with the practical day-to-day functions required of it. It has to isolate the home from the outside, the noise, the heat and the cold. Along with keeping out the elements, it also has to defeat unwanted human intrusion.

That poses the question, haven't doors always done this, aren't they guaranteed for this. While the consumer might have thought so, and for the most part the elements to deliver the ideal have always been there, the industry has shied away from keeping to its end of the bargain. However, in recent times we have seen more and more companies making sure they are known as being at the forefront of this revolution - to be seen to do what it says on the tin.

If you are a company at the vanguard of doing what the customer expects, you have in today's world to keep the message rolling out. This is your unique selling point, the USP that causes you to succeed. Remembering at the same time the majority are still out of step (and they are) you have the opportunity of gaining massively.

As long as the testing standards of performance are not compulsory (as now with the BFRC energy rating) the differentiator remains and the top performers are identified. That might seem a contradiction when the industry has the desire to project a squeaky clean façade, but looked at it in the round, compulsion causes sameness, sameness kills marketing and that in turn kills an industry. Energy rated windows – to the consumer all companies are the same, so in those terms does it matter which one a customer buys.

" " - advertisement

Put it another way performance standards are best used to emphasise and identify the difference in a great performing company, rather than nullifying their achievements by tying all companies together to make them appear to be equal. Most of the time, the well-meaning and intentioned kill off growth and improvement at no cost or loss to themselves, but with a massive loss to the consumer and the efforts of an industry at the front end to grow and innovate for the benefit of the whole market. The only differentiator when the choice is neutralised, is price, low prices do not produce the quality of installation the consumer has the right to expect. Low prices do not produce the profit needed and necessary for growth.

The door side of the Fenestration Industry has to be applauded for raising standards, supplying enhanced products and moving forward at a rapid rate while raising awareness to an ever enlightened audience.

The human race is a marvel with an infinite number of achievements, both to its credit and detriment. The reason we celebrate difference in this human race is because it is that that enriches life. Clone it to conform, it will wither and die.

Letter to the editor - security is the most important consideration - Simon Beer

Dear Ian

In Gareth Mobley’s letter which was published last issue, he mentioned that research conducted by Manchester University has revealed that security is the most important consideration when homeowners buy external doors.

I believe that the introduction of Approved Document Q is a positive move, but it is a shame that it only applies to new build homes. Surely occupants of existing buildings are equally concerned about security – why should they have a higher risk of burglary to that of someone living in a new build property?...[ more ]

Yours sincerely

Simon Beer - Managing Director, Calibso Limited

Letter to the Editor - Charlotte Davies Edgetech (UK) Ltd

Dear Ian

When modern methods start being added into standards and legislation, we see a real shift in the industry. We saw it with energy efficient windows and now we’re seeing it with installation tape.

The industry got taped up at FIT Show. The response to TruFit®, our expanding foam edge tape was incredible. Installers wanted to talk not only about the cost and time savings of using sealing tapes, but also systemising installations in a way which maintains the energy efficiency of the window...[ more ]

Yours sincerely,

Charlotte Davies, Head of Marketing, Edgetech (UK) Ltd
