Observations

This week’s roundup sees seemingly 2 unconnected In-box items from Simon Beer, Calibso Ltd and Roy Frost, Deceuninck. However, on reading, there is a convergence of ideas in that both are pointing out how, instead of an industry moving on, there is still the tendency for the industry to fall into traps.

There are standards, standards and then the reality of what is to be achieved. Expectations of a product’s capability and how they are of benefit to the consumer, for the moment, still seems to exist on a different page from those that define practice and standards.

System Houses seem to be locked into the next big idea, playing follow the leader, or being top of a standard chart without asking the basic question. In real terms does this provide the consumer with the enhancements and the benefits implied, they need and they think they are paying for.

For instance an A+ window for the most part is lucky to provide any improvement over and above a D rated window in the majority of applications. A warm-edge IGU barely gets above the performance of a solid spacer IGU. Then you get 5, 7 or more chamber profiles that do no more than provide similar insulation qualities to that of a 3 chamber system.

A reactionary conclusion? Not really. What is suggested at testing or performance gauging is only that in isolation. Nothing is taken in the round, meaning - as it comes together in the real world. There is also a moral problem when these isolated standards are quoted to the consumer as an intended benefit. They are not, as for the most part they just don’t and cannot relate to their installation.

You can only install windows of A+ rating if the windows you install are exactly the same size, on the same elevation and same configuration as the test. They never are.

Warm-edge IGU’s will only ever fulfil their promise if the frames they go into also isolate the internal side and edge of the IGU from external free air. The norm is for this not to happen so negating the possible benefit.

Additional profile chambers do not achieve potential all the time they do not facilitate the isolation of the also needed free air (for drainage) from passing to the inside. For the most part the insulation of all frames be it 3, 5, & 7 is the same, just a small internal weather strip on the internal edge.

All the above errors are then compounded as pointed out by Simon Beer (Calibso), the Guys at illbruck, ISO-Chemie and Edgetech to name just a few, as for the most part the actual installation of frames is not to specification. Painters caulk on one side and silicone on the other is not insulation and hasn’t been that way to my knowledge for more than 25 years.

All the above is without mentioning trickle vents, a device that for a couple of quid has managed to circumvent good building practice and totally destroy the technology available for quality home insulation. It’s the wrong lazy answer to a serious problem.

It is easy to see that everything is there or thereabouts to lift the meaningful performance of a window so the consumer could actually gain. It doesn’t even seem to have cost implications. The missing link is the conversation between the backend and the front end that seems to be missing.

An industry thriving is when there is delivery of expectation to the consumer not just the next link in the supply chain.

Letter from Roy Frost: Industry sleepwalking into a crisis’

Dear Ian

The industry hasn’t had a major product crisis for years, thank goodness. But the industry has a habit of creating its own crises; own goals that knock the industry off-course.

Usually they’re down to bad practice and reckless cost saving. And matching what others are doing, rather than doing what’s technically correct or sensible.

I’m thinking of the disruption, damage and cost of discoloured door panels; of peeling, cracking or bubbling foils; delaminating, warping and bowing composite doors; of pitting peeling hardware, and pinking profiles. ..[ more ]

Roy Frost, MD Deceuninck UK & Ireland

Letter to the Editor, Response- Charlotte Davies, Edgetech from Simon Beer, Calibso

Dear Ian,

I read Charlotte Davies’ letter with interest, and it is good to see that some installers are thinking about how to improve how their windows and doors are sealed to the surrounding structure.

On the other end of the scale however, I regularly see installations where the void between the frame and the brickwork has only been partially sealed, sometimes with nothing more than a bead of silicone sealant being applied between the frame and the brickwork. This installation detail may appear trivial, but it can make a substantial difference to how a window or doorset performs in terms of both heat retention and sound reduction. ..[ more ]

Yours sincerely

Simon Beer, Calibso Limited
