The Elephant in the room.

Brexit. ‘Project Fear’ realised or do you see the start of a new opportunity? One of those glass half-full, half-empty questions. The vacuum left by having the Political Classes occupied posturing to strengthen their own personal positions has allowed the main stream media to have a field day with stories of gloom & doom.

The trend is to mislead and misrepresent along with misdirection so creating confusion. As with marketing generally the so-called market makers are exploiting the situation further for no other reason than create profit. There is no doubt that one is feeding the other.

The reality, who is affected? Figures from the ONS suggest that the UK’s trade with the EU is 13% of GDP. In simplistic terms the conclusion from that would be while the 13% could be affected and will be to a degree, the other 87% is un-affected and about to be freed from the constraints of a heavily controlled protected market, so their opportunity to grow is magnified. Not to lose sight of the fact that the EU single market is not and never has been a ‘free trade market’, it’s a very expensive, you could even say contrived inward looking market that seeks to protect itself as much as it can within WTO agreements from the rest of the World.

Now’s the time to grab the opportunity while the less astute are losing their heads and wringing their hands.

Letter to the Editor - Gareth Mobley, CEO Solidor & Residor

Dear Ian

Whatever your views about Brexit, you can expect to see it blamed for things not even remotely connected with it. The ‘spin’ has started.

On 11th September 2001, after the World Trade Center towers had been hit in terrorist attacks, Transport Secretary Stephen Byer’s special advisor Jo Moore emailed the department’s press office saying: ‘It's now a very good day to get out anything we want to bury’.

The following day the department announced changes to Councillors’ Allowances. Nearly a month later, Moore's email was leaked to the press where it provoked a row about the cynical nature of spin. The leaked email appeared the day after Byers had announced the placing of Railtrack in administration. ..[ more ]

Gareth Mobley, CEO Solidor & Residor

Letter to the Editor - Roy Frost, Deceuninck Managing Director

Dear Ian,

Voters’ decision to leave the EU in the Brexit referendum caught commentators and the political establishment by surprise.

We were warned about short term volatility in shares and exchange rates and we got them. A week after, the FTE 100 stock market had its best day for five years. The following day it fell back on news that the Bank of England may cut interest rates in August and restart quantitative easing.

Commentators who assumed the worst, marked down housebuilders shares. Steve Morgan chairman of Redrow whose shares dropped 30% as a result said: “sites remain busy, post Brexit, reservations continue to be taken. ..[ more ]

Yours sincerely

Sincerely
Roy Frost, Managing Director Deceuninck UK

Targeting for results – 50 million and still counting.

Marketing, who is the target? Obviously the Trade Media by its very existence is a marketing tool as much as it is the purveyor of Industry News.

That opens up the question is the published item - for now, today, this month or a long term reference point. Then a further question how do you cause it to grab attention, stand out and get recognised.

Research has shown that more than 60% of us now consume our news online. That means our overriding attention is grabbed by the soundbite, the snapshot, the headline and the first sentence. The shame of this is that content can take second place. There is also a trend, as we have seen with general news media confusingly the soundbite doesn’t have to mean what the item itself is about. If you like, the shout-out bit is to grab attention, the content then is the qualification so as not to get sued.

The contradiction is it’s the headline that gets absorbed as the truth.

From the Fenestration News website we can pass on what our tracking and monitoring appears to reveal after more than 50 Million news page views (Yes 50,000,000 +). ..[ more ]
