Yesterday, tomorrow and on

This past week has seen Edgetech celebrate its 10th Year of manufacturing in the UK. To mark the occasion Edgetech and its parent company Quanex opened its doors to its customer, friends and the media with a presentation of how it was, is and anticipated to be going forward.

There is no doubting the enthusiasm shown for the company, by its staff, management and customers, both here and in the US. This in turn is reflected in the ever-increasing demand for its products and services.

I say services deliberately as there is more to Edgetech than a supply of warmedge spacer. One thing is clear, most companies in this industry suffer with not being able to attract staff as they once did. Some of this is growth, but also there has been an expectation in the industry that there is always someone with experience to fill the gap when the time arises-the industry has a tradition of not training, and not encouraging new blood.

In part, this can also be put down to facilities and capability. Over recent years to grow companies they have had to become leaner, tighter and more efficient in their day-to-day activities. The downside of that is the creative thinking and planning for tomorrow can’t find space in the schedule.

For this evolving fast pace of development to continue, the industry has to find ways to handle its growth dilemmas, how to do the same with less or get gobbled up, fade or disappear. That's where Edgetech comes in, they have already experienced this trend in the US. In the US they fill this gap with more and more automation, something Edgetech has the experience with and its warmedge spacer lends itself to it…

Following the move in the US towards IGU automation, earlier this year we saw the first similar production line in the UK at Double R in Wellingborough. Made to measure IGU's rolling of the line every 20 seconds, with just one or two guys in attendance, says it all.

Logic from that is to compete, your IGU's need to perform, be of a consistent quality and roll off the assembly line every 20 seconds to keep pace with those around you.

Then again competing is and always has been, finding the edge, the differentiator from others.
