Glass companies fined - as anticipated, when a group of like-minded companies
get together from the same industry complaining about being in crisis and
reduced margins, a solution is often found. The European Commission (EC)
however takes a poor view of the obvious conclusions that arise out of such
gatherings. The EC in this instance has fined four companies - Pilkington,
France's Saint-Gobain, Asahi Glass of Japan and America's Guardian - for price
fixing and creating other commercial conditions to try to raise and stabilise
prices.
Guardian has been fined ?148 million, followed by Pilkington at ?140 million
while Saint-Gobain will pay ?133.9 million and Asahi ?65 million. As to be
expected these companies have the right to appeal. People affected by the
cartel's collusion can seek damages.

One thing the industry is not short of this week is good news, it's clear that
most companies have training and awards in their sights as a demonstration of
continued commitment to development of their business model. We also have a
string of companies lining up with better and improving sales figures all
demonstrating growth. Among these are Thermoseal, " ", Masterfame, Crystal
Direct, and TuffX
As if to keep piling on the pressure another indication of the health of the
industry is the amount of jobs on offer with a whole raft of new vacancies
posted on the jobs board.
Can anything be read into these trends? Well, all the good news is from the
innovators that understand their customers and the type of jobs on offer are
those that indicate commitment to growth.

Dear Ian,
I'm sure many shared my surprise last week at the news published from a study
commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust and Energy Efficiency Partnership for
Homes. The UK Glazing Sector report highlighted that out of the 9 million
windows replaced annually, 2 million are now second time replacements. That's
over 20% of the market looking for a convincing reason to change their old
double glazed windows. Edgetech has been highlighting the benefits of Window
Energy Ratings (WERs) as a powerful sales tool for the industry. It's
interesting to see third party research demonstrating why we are seeing our
customers benefit from this growing market sector.
The report shows that people will pay more for an energy efficient home and an
increasing number of households are looking for information on how to improve
the environmental performance of their property. What a powerful pitch for
installers selling Energy Saving Recommended windows into the home! And this
isn't the only report with such findings.

Glazing Over the Window Pain
The Prime Minister recently outlined new thinking on the terrorist threat along
with a variety of measures to better protect the public. These include enhanced
security checks at some 250 railway stations and other 'sensitive
installations' - as well as issuing further advice to, for example, theatre
operators and restaurateurs.
The government, he said, would also be advising companies on bomb proofing their
buildings and that architects will be encouraged to include security measures
such as blast barriers in their designs. The government conceded that this may
mean changes to the physical layout of buildings.
In all, it seemed to underline the old Chinese curse that we live in uncertain
times and, as 9/11 demonstrated so graphically, it also now involves the design
of new buildings and how those buildings can be built to withstand new threats.
